Winger salvages 11th place finish in season opener at Volusia
Behind the wheel of his Johnny Doan Plumbing No. 12 Late Model, Ashton Winger made the trek to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) on Wednesday afternoon to kick off the 2021 season with the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals. Drawing 38 World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series entries, Winger suffered a blown engine in hot laps, forcing him to hop behind the wheel of Mike Collins’ No. 3 Late Model for the remainder of the evening. Following an eighth place finish in his heat race, Ashton logged an 11th place outing in his B-Main. Earning a provisional into the opening night feature, Winger marched through the field 13 spots in the 40-lapper to register an 11th-place finish. (Rich LaBrier photo | Dirtman Photography)
With a rainout on Friday evening allowing Ashton and his team more time to replace the motor in his No. 12 machine for Saturday night's contest, Winger followed up a ninth place finish in his heat with an eighth place outing in his B-Main. Relying on a provisional into the $10,000-to-win finale, Ashton got caught behind a wreck on lap 23 that brought a disappointing end to his weekend.
