The Georgia racer had his sights set on a $20,000 victory on Saturday night before mechanical woes sidelined him early.
“We picked up another one (win) this weekend. Thought we were gonna have a good shot at another one on Saturday before we had a mechanical issue. Thanks to everyone involved, who makes this deal go round and thanks to everyone down in Milton, Florida for the hospitality,” Winger said. “Our 2021 season is in the books, and we are now preparing for a big 2022. I’m just very grateful for the support and opportunities that I have.”
Ashton Winger trekked to Southern Raceway (Milton, Fla.) on Friday evening as he returned to the driver’s seat of the Gambler Transport Motorsports No. 89 Late Model for the inaugural King of the Sandbox presented by Sweet Victory Apparel.
With a heat race win placing him on the pole for the preliminary feature, Winger outdueled teammate G.R. Smith to secure his 13th win of the season and a $5,000 prize. He took the checkers ahead of Smith, Max Blair, Brandon Overton, and Josh Putnam.
On Saturday, Ashton locked his spot into the $20,000-to-win finale with a heat victory. Starting in second, Winger slowed on the fourth lap with mechanical issues. He was credited with a 14th-place finish.
