Ashton Winger Begins DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia
Ashton Winger returned to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) on Monday afternoon competing in a field of 44 DIRTcar Late Models for the 49th annual DIRTcar Nationals. Following the second fastest lap in his time trial group behind Michael Norris, Winger scored a 3rd place finish in his heat which positioned him ninth on the starting grid for the opening night feature. Dropping four spots in the 30-lap affair, Ashton recorded a 13th place outing.
The following night, Ashton gained one spot in his heat race to place 6th. Needing a 2nd place finish or better in his B-Main to make the $7,000-to-win A-Main, Winger fell short with a 4th place finish.
On Wednesday evening for the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series sanctioned contest, Winger edged his way into the A-Main with the 3rd and final transfer spot in his heat race. With $10,000 on the line, Ashton improved one spot in the 40-lap affair to place 14th.
For the fourth round of the 49th annual DIRTcar Nationals on Thursday night, Ashton fell one spot short of transfer position in his heat with a 4th place finish. Slipping back to an 11th place finish in his B-Main, Winger was granted a provisional into the $10,000-to-win A-Main. Passing eight cars in the 40-lapper, Ashton Winger scored an 18th place outing.
On Friday afternoon, Winger followed up the second fastest lap in his time trial group with a 2nd place finish in his heat behind Chase Junghans. Falling short of a Top-10 finish in the 40-lap feature, Ashton slipped back to a 17th place finish.
Wrapping up the 49th annual DIRTcar Nationals on Saturday evening, Ashton posted a 7th place finish in his heat race, sending him into the B-Main. Coming one spot shy of a transfer position with a 4th place finish, Winger was forced to rely on a provisional into the finale. With $10,000 on the line, Ashton Winger gained five spots in the 50-lap affair to place 19th.
