Vado serves as season opener for Mitchell

Jon Mitchell kicked off his 2024 campaign over the weekend with a trip to Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park to compete in the 18th annual Wild West Shootout behind the wheel of his GRT Race Cars No. 5 Modified.

Mitchell was one of 60 Modified drivers at the 3/8-mile oval during the six-race series' first night on Saturday. After a third-place finish in his heat race, Mitchell came home seventh in his B-Feature and was unable to transfer to the night’s 25-lap, $2,000-to-win main event.

On Sunday, 57 Modified competitors descended on Vado seeking another $2,000 top prize. On a cold and windy day, Mitchell finished seventh in his heat race and 19th in his B-Feature, ending his evening before the 25-lap finale.

The second portion of the Wild West Shootout begins on Wednesday, January 10.
