Gemmill bags 4th USRA Mod win of year; Miller, Schrag, and Kelley victorious.

Mother nature tried hard to dampen the spirits of racers and fans alike at 81 Speedway in Park City on Saturday night. Receiving an inch of rain during the overnight hours, a soggy facility greeted promoter John Allen and the track prep crew early Saturday morning. With determination and luck on their side, they dodged more rain throughout the day, dried out and ironed in what started as a mud pit earlier in the day, and were rewarded for their efforts; providing racers and fans alike with a lightning fast multi-groove racing surface all evening long.

The Mini Stock division, although short on cars, did not lack in on track excitement. Wichita’s Colten Kelley spoiled a race long battle between R.C. Esparza and Jayce Reimer, utilizing a last lap pass to steal the win, as all 4 cars crossed the line with less than 6/10 of a seconds separating 1st from 4th. Esparza was 2nd, Reimer 3rd, and Dale Shockey crossed the line 4th. Haley Cash was credited with fifth, and Reimer picked up the lone heat race win.

AutoTech Service Center Street Stock action saw another first-time winner this season at the 81 Speedway. Once the Klein Construction Company green flag waved, front row starters Kyle Blocker and Tommy Miller engaged in a spirited battle for the lead. Running side by side for the first five circuits, trouble began for the M111 of Miller at the exit of turn two. Giving off a big puff of smoke and momentary flash fire, a problem developed on the left front corner of the M111 machine. Taking advantage of lap traffic and Miller’s wounded machine, the 321 of Adam Schrag slipped by both Miller and Blocker to take over the top spot. Mechanical woes 2 laps later ended a good run for the 09B, and the ensuing restart saw Miller’s issues magnify ending his night against the turn 3 wall. The race’s final restart saw the 24B of David Blocher pull up to the backside of the 321 machine, but Schrag proved too strong crossing the checker a full second in front of Blocher. Jerrod Reimer was 3rd, David Blevins 4th, and Rod Northcutt completed the top 5. Reimer and David Blocher picked up heat race wins.

HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars saw a familiar name at the top of the leaderboard, as Scott Miller claimed his 6th win of the season. Pole sitter George Ramey led early with the 3rd starting Miller immediately giving chase. At the half-way point, Miller had erased what was once an early 10 car length lead, completing a pass for the lead on lap 9. Fifth starting Joey Richmond saw his march to the front encounter early race battles with point leader Clint Smith and the 202 car of Kenny Ziegler. Solidly in third by lap 5, Richmond set his sights on Miller and Ramey at the front of the field. Finally catching Ramey on lap 12, Richmond tried hard to dispose of the 76 machine to give himself time to try and run down the 1 of Miller. Determined not to lose another spot, Ramey continued to battle along the top side of the speedway, racing door with Richmond the rest of the way. At the line it was Richmond winning the battle for 2nd, Ramey was 3rd, point leader Clint Smith finished 4th, and Ziegler completed the top 5. Three heat races saw Miller, Ramey, and Richmond pick up wins.

Another large field of cars for the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified division saw 35 cars sign into the pit area, including a couple of drivers enjoying a rare weekend off the USMTS tour trail. Current USMTS Rookie of the Year point leader Tyler Davis from Haysville signed in for a start at his home track, as well as Tucson, Arizona’s Jake O’Neil. Davis used a strong heat race, starting 6th and winning heat race #2, to claim top passing points honors for the evening. O’Neil’s night got off to a bit of a tougher start. A rare miscue by the #0 team saw O’Neil miss the initial call to the lineup area delaying the start of heat race #1. Scheduled to start third, track officials placed the 0 at the tail of the field for the infraction and O’Neil was unable to overcome the deficit, sending him to the nights B-feature. O’Neil turned fortunes around later in the night winning the B-Feature, lining himself up to start 13th in the A.

The top 6 redraw saw Wichita’s Brendon Gemmill race away from the pole and battles inside the top 6 raged on early and often at the drop of the green. Third starting Darren Moses immediately took control of the 2 spot, while 4th starting Ryan McAninch slotted into 3rd. Tyler Davis immediately went to work battling with the G51 of Lucas Gibbs for 4th. Meanwhile Jake O’Neil drove from his 13th starting spot, moving his way into the top 10 after the opening two laps. Cautions through the middle third of the 20-lap feature created chaos on multiple restarts, leading to a heavily jumbled running order for the last 7 laps. Reaching lap 13 Gemmill, Davis, McAninch, O’Neil, and Moses made up the top five. O’Neil continued his march towards the front, engaging in a heated battle for the 3rd spot with McAninch. Just ahead, Davis continued to search the 81 Speedway surface for a faster line to run down the G3 of Gemmill. Just before lap traffic was able to play a factor, the Hoover Mower Sales caution waved slowing the field on lap 17. The ensuing restart played out in exciting fashion as both Davis and O’Neil both utilized the bottom side of the Speedway to try and pass Gemmill and McAninch respectively. Davis used a big run down the back stretch into turn 3 to duck to the bottom side of the speedway once again and attempt a slider off 4. Unable to clear the G3, Davis gave way allowing Gemmill to create a 4 car length gap with 2 to go. As the leaders drove away O’Neil finally won the battle for the 3 spot. At the checker, it was Brendon Gemmill who lead all 20 laps, and collected his 4th win of the year at 81 Speedway. Davis, O’Neil, McAninch finished 2nd – 4th and a strong run from the 12th starting spot saw the 25 of Derby’s Scott Green round out the top 5. Another strong run inside the top 10 saw chassis builder Bob Bills drive his BillsBuilt chassis from 16th to 8th picking up his second top 10 of the year. The 4 heat race wins were collected by Ryan McAninch, Tyler Davis, Lucas Gibbs, and Tad Davis.

Racing actions returns next Saturday evening September 5th with Alternative Pest Management USRA Modifieds, Late Models, Mod Lites, and Mini Stocks all on tap.
