Hammer charges to fifth-place finish in MARS stop at Kankakee
Kyle Hammer unloaded his Brent McKinnon backed No. 26H Late Model at Kankakee County Speedway (Kankakee, Ill.) on Friday evening for the MARS Late Model Championship event.
With 27 Late Models entered for the opener to the three-race swing, Hammer raced his way into the A-Main with a ninth-to-fifth run in his B-Main after finishing eighth in his heat. Wheeling his way into the top-five, Kyle passed 15 cars in the 40-lap affair to register a fifth-place finish. He chased Jason Feger, Ryan Unzicker, Logan Nickerson, and Mike Mataragas to the checkers.
For another $5,000-to-win event on Saturday at Charleston Speedway (Charleston, Ill.), Kyle followed up a sixth-place finish in his heat race with a runner-up run in his B-Main. Moving forward four spots in a feature that saw limited passing, Hammer crossed the line in 13th.
The team planned to compete at Adams County Speedway (Quincy, Ill.) on Sunday but hurt a motor in hot laps that brought a disappointing end to the weekend.
