Derek Poland Celebrates July 4th Weekend with Street Stock Special Win

Rothbury, Michigan (Friday, July 3rd, 2015): The Fourth of July weekend kicked off on Friday Night with a full racing program and a spectacular fireworks show at the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile high banked dirt oval of the Winston Speedway in Rothbury, Michigan. The show was headlined by a Street Stock special presented by APS Performance Collision. The Late Models, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, Michigan Dirt Modifieds, Bombers, Four-Cylinder Warriors, and Young Guns were all on hand as well to perform in front of the packed grandstands.

The Young Guns Feature event ended with a first career victory by 15-year old Hedi Barnhard who started fifth worked her way to the front of the field and was under threat of losing her race lead multiple times up to and including when the white dropped signally one lap remaining. But the Muskegon, Michigan native held her ground and was indeed the first to cross the finish line picking her very first feature win. Barnhard won the race driving her Joe’s Auto Parts #3. Ronnie VanNatter finished just behind in second. Gabe Flores, Hannah Zwart, and Madison Crane rounded out the top five. VanNatter won the heat.

The 15-lap Four-Cylinder Warriors were lead out by Chris Gagnon and Bob Halberstadt. Gagnon was able to go on and get the victory after outlasting all of the other hungry competitors. This was Gagnon’s third win of the season behind the wheel of his #97.Buck Spencer finished second. Terry Woodard, Melissa Sprague, and Mindi Holy finished off the top five. Defending track champions Gary Larabee and Ryan Hamm were the winners of the heat races.

Mike Epplett and Travis Dewitt led out the Bombers 20-lap A-Main. Epplett lead in the early going, but it did not take long for the defending track champion Dan Wilson Jr. to find his way to the front of the field and never looking back from there going on to pick up the win. This was the Muskegon, Michigan driver’s fourth win in a row in his A&A Manufacturing #57. Mike Fekken finished in the second spot. Epplett, Robb Sternberg, and Mike Roe capped off the top five. Wilson and Fekken won the heat races.

Josh Grabe won the 20-lap feature for the Michigan Dirt Modified Feature. Grabe dominated the affair taking the lead early on after starting on the pole, and never looking back from there picking up the win. Grabe, a native of Muskegon, Michigan earned his fifth victory of the season in the Grabe Well-Drilling #g5. Brad Bates finished second. Joe Carmean, Vern Buskirk, and Ted Cooper made up the top five finishers. Grabe also won the lone heat race.

Jeff Erickson Jr. won the 20-lap A-Main for the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds. He started third to begin the event. Tom Sprague Jr. had the advantage early, but there was no stopping Erickson as he powered his way to the front of the field, and made trip to victory lane to pick up his fifth win of the season. The Muskegon, Michigan driver won behind the wheel of the Salon One / #1E. Sprague finished second. Dave Schmidt, Brian Kiester, and Greg Smith rounded out the top five. Erickson also picked up the heat win.

The 25-lap Late Model feature was lead out by CJ Heskett and Kyle Borgman. Borgman won the battle for the lead after the completion of lap #1. He would remain there for a majority of the event. However with just four laps to go he would get caught up in lap traffic, which allowed multi-time track champion Rich Neiser to soar to the lead and get the win. Neiser the native of Fruitport, Michigan earned the third win of the year for the Baker Engineering #87. Borgman had to settle for second. Kevin Nelson Jr., Alan Vochaska, and Rob Taylor completed the top five. The preliminary heat races were won by Vochaska and Taylor.

Finally, The Street Stocks squared off in a heated contest for their special presented by APS Performance Collison. Josh Sternberg and Billy Frey led the field down to the green flag. When the dust finally settled it was Derek Poland who won battle, after taking the lead very early in the feature event. This was the fifth win of the season for the Muskegon, Michigan based Joe’s Auto Parts #13. He finished ahead of Paul Namey who was the runner up. Josh Sternberg, Robbie Sternberg, and Jeremy Holman finished off the top five. The Lone heat race was won by Holman.
