Pifer Eyes Little Guy Nationals

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – As the 2014 racing season begins to wind down, one Pennsylvania racer is looking to rebound from a year of misfortune. Darren Pifer has had a tumultuous 2014, his first year in a 305 sprint car. A cockpit fire causing severe burns over a quarter of his body sidelined him for three months, then a mechanical issue last weekend didn’t allow him to take his car out of gear, sending the #23 into a wall before racing action commenced at Clinton County Speedway. Slight damage to the J&J chassis left it in need of repair, but the team promptly sent it off for repairs, in time for the upcoming weekend.
Pifer seeks redemption at Mercer Raceway Park this weekend for their 15th Annual “Little Guy Nationals,” which features 305 Sprints paying $500 and $1000 to win on Friday and Saturday, respectively; it will be the Punxsutawney, PA native’s first on-track action at the 3/8 mile Mercer since the fire.
He picked up his best sprint car finish to date on April 26 at Mercer, finishing seventh. Two weeks later at the track, he experienced motor troubles in the feature, taking a DNF, one night before the fire at Sportsman’s Speedway. After his three-month recovery, he has raced three times in the sprint car, finishing 12th on August 16, 13th on August 23, and ninth on August 24 in the sprinter, and once in the kart, a third-place finish on September 12.

After the Little Guy Nationals, Pifer is next scheduled to compete on October 10 and 11 at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, PA for their “Blue Collar Classic Weekend” featuring the Keystone RaceSaver 305 Sprint Challenge in the #23 305ci Sprint entry.
