Binz Powers to Second Straight Runner-Up Finish at Mountain Creek

Inside Line Promotions – KENNEDALE, Texas (June 1, 2014) – John Binz is inching closer and closer to his first career micro sprint victory.

Binz finished second last Friday at Mountain Creek Speedway in Grand Prairie, Texas, during winged competition for the second straight race.

“We just needed to be a little better in the feature,” he said.

Binz started the night by advancing from fifth to fourth place in his heat race, which lined him up on the outside of the fifth row for the 20-lap feature.

“I got to fifth or sixth place within two or three laps and then we had a caution,” he said. “Within two or three laps after the caution I was leading. I led three or four laps running the top.”

The eventual winner took the top spot by utilizing the bottom groove and Binz followed suit. However, he was unable to regain the lead and Binz ended with a second-place result, which was his second podium in three races this season.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Kennedale Speedway Park.

“We left a little late because we were working on the car all day and got stuck in traffic,” he said. “When we got there trucks and trailers were still trying to get in the pit gate and they were already hot lapping.”

Binz was told he missed the draw and he was forced to start last – ninth – in his heat race.

“I passed all the guys on the top,” he said. “I got to fifth pretty quick and the guy running fourth held me up for a couple of laps. Second, third and fourth place got hung up on the last lap and I sailed around them.”

Binz finished his heat race with a second-place finish, but he was told that he would still have to start the main event last because of missing the draw at the beginning of the night.

“I knew it was going to be slick all the way to the top,” he said. “We changed bars in the car. We were going to be a hero or a zero. The car wasn’t as good as it needed to be. It needed to be way, way tighter. I just tried to make the middle work and we just salvaged what we could.”

Binz rallied to a 14th-place result after starting 25th.

“Starting 25th in a 20-lap feature, it’s a long way to get up there,” he said. “It was a good weekend. I just wish the draw wouldn’t have hurt us so much at Kennedale.”
