Binz Caps Season With Tough Luck at 5th annual Longhorn Shootout

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Dec. 1, 2014) – John Binz closed the 2014 season last weekend by recording a pair of top 20s during the 5th annual Longhorn Shootout.

“All in all it was a success making the main events, especially the nonwing show out of almost 50 cars,” he said. “I just wish we had a little better luck in the features.”

Binz kicked off the weekend on Friday with winged and nonwing heat races in the micro sprint event at Resistol Arena.

He was unable to finish his first winged heat race and he advanced from eighth to fourth place in his second heat. That put him 14th in overall points, which locked him into Saturday’s 25-lap main event.

Binz maneuvered from ninth to fourth place in his first nonwing heat race on Friday and from fourth to third place during his second heat. He was 11th in overall points to earn a spot in Saturday’s 50-lap feature.

“I was excited to make the show in both classes through the heat races,” he said. “That made it a lot easier on Saturday not having to run a B Main.”

Unfortunately, Saturday ended with similar results in both classes.

“I was running around 11th or 12th early in the winged main event and ended up getting spun out,” he said. “I had to go to the back and the track was right around the bottom. A few laps later a couple of cars in front of me spun out and we all piled up.”

Binz had too much front end damage to continue the race and he was credited with a 17th-place finish.

The night wrapped up with the 50-lap nonwing main event.

“It was kind of the same thing as in the winged race,” he said. “I was running 9th or 10th. I went up to the top and missed the line and spun. I went to the back and drove up to about 10th again. I went to the top to try and make some moves. My car was way too tight and by the time I got down the leader was by me. I didn’t want to be the guy racing with the leaders on a narrow track like that so I pulled off. It’s pretty hard to pass there.”

Binz ended with a 17th-place result in that feature as well.

“I want to thank Chris Brown, Joey Starnes, Claud Estes, Colby Estes, my mom and dad, and my wonderful girlfriend for all of the support and help last weekend,” he said.

Binz ended his limited season with two victories and six top fives in a dozen races.
