Dominic Scelzi Posts Top-Five Finish With World of Outlaws in Tulare

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 13, 2018) – Dominic Scelzi maneuvered to a fourth-place finish last Friday at Thunderbowl Raceway to earn a top-five result with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series for the third consecutive year.

“That was huge,” he said. “In the past I’ve struggled racing there. We rolled into the Trophy Cup (last year) and I thought we were the fastest car every time we hit the track, but we didn’t end that weekend the way we wanted. To return to the track a couple of months later with the World of Outlaws and record a top five is a huge confidence boost.”

The night began with Scelzi qualified second quickest in his group and third overall out of 43 drivers.

“We timed in really well last year so I wasn’t really surprised,” he said. “I felt like that’s where we left off and the quality of race team we are right now. That was a testament to how strong we’ve been.”

Scelzi won a heat race from the pole position to lock himself into the dash. Unfortunately, he drew the highest number – eight – and he finished where he started. That lined Scelzi up on the outside of the fourth row – next to his younger brother, Giovanni – for the 35-lap main event.

“Danny Lasoski and Donny Schatz have pounded in my head you can’t win in the first 10 laps,” he said. “With the way the track was I knew I needed to stay patient. I got by Gio (Scelzi) and (Carson) Macedo. We had a restart around Lap 5 and I got to fifth right away. I was able to get under someone halfway through for fourth. Then I got by (Jason) Meyers around the bottom in turns three and four. Donny and I battled for quite a bit when I was in third. I just could never clear him.”

“We could have ended anywhere from second to fifth very easily,” he said. “I was thrilled with it. We had a competitive car the whole race.”

Saturday’s race rained out at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Scelzi is scheduled to compete this Friday and Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., during the FVP Platinum Battery Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws. He has won a pair of King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series races at the track, including his first ever in 2013.
