Gio Scelzi 13th at Capitani Classic
PETERSEN MEDIA- Though it was ran under the “One and Only’ and ‘Capitani Classic’ banner and not the Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway over the weekend, Gio Scelzi held his own against one of the toughest fields of the year as he picked up a 13th place finish on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway.
“Though it wasn’t the Nationals with the Nationals format, it was a tough field of cars and a format that was possibly tougher,” Gio Scelzi said. “It was a solid weekend for the KCP Racing team, I just wasn’t able to make anything happen when a few opportunities were presented to me.”
With 67 cars checked into the Knoxville Raceway on Thursday night, Scelzi timed the Logan Contractors Supply Inc./Aspen Aire/Royal Flooring backed No. 18 machine in 25th fastest in time trials before finishing third in his first heat race of the week.
Having enough nightly points to lock directly into the opening night feature, the Fresno, CA driver took the green flag from the 15th starting position. Looking to maximize his event points in the feature event, Scelzi was able to keep his nose clean as he worked his way towards the Top-10.
Able to avoid a big pile up that happened in front of him, Scelzi would go on to pocket an eighth-place finish and look forward to ‘The One and Only’ Night 2 on Friday night.
Timing in 17th fastest on night two Scelzi would line up in the sixth starting position of heat race action. Losing a spot, Scelzi would finish seventh and his point total would place him 12th in the 12-lap Last Chance Showdown.
With only four spots left in the feature event, Scelzi would do what he could to punch his ticket into the feature event, but he would come up just short. Finishing sixth in the semi, Scelzi’s night would come to an early end as he sat in an okay position heading into Saturday night qualifiers.
Lining up third in his qualifier on Saturday, Scelzi was focused on running inside the Top-4 and transferring directly into the 30-lap Capitani Classic feature event.
Able to finish third as he flanked Daryn Pittman and Spencer Bayston, Scelzi was able to safely secure a spot into the big show as he rolled off the starting grid from the 16th starting position.
From the eighth row, Scelzi would only pick up a few positions against the star-studded field. Battling with the likes of Joey Saldana, Brian Brown, and Donny Schatz, Scelzi would cap his Knoxville weekend off with a 13th place finish in the feature event.
“We definitely can’t hang our heads about a 13th place finish at the biggest race of the year, but still we want more,” Scelzi added. “I am hungrier than I have ever been to win races.”
KCP Racing would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Ted’s Body Shop, Team Excavating, Cox Design and Fabrication, Armor Electric Company, TammyHeckart.com, Quality Traffic Control, BergenKDV, and BK Racing Titanium for their support this season.
