Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2020) – January is a busy month for Giovanni Scelzi, who is preparing for a handful of marquee short-track racing events.
It begins next week when he heads to the middle of the country for the 34th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire, which runs Monday through Saturday inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. Scelzi’s preliminary night is Wednesday and he’ll pilot a Tucker-Boat Motorsports midget.
“Racing with a team that is one of the top teams, the equipment and knowledge are there so I just have to do my part,” he said. “I’m confident with the program and I think we get along really well.”
Scelzi captured his first career midget triumph during only his sixth career USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series start and 11th race in a midget last fall. He takes that momentum into this year’s Chili Bowl Nationals, which currently has 355 entries.
“The format has changed since the last time I was there,” said Scelzi, who earned the Chili Bowl Nationals Rookie of the Year Award in 2018. “They only lock in the top two from preliminary night since there are five prelim nights now. In a way that makes it harder, but it spreads out the good cars throughout the week more.
“Our goal is to lock in through the prelim. I didn’t have much midget experience going into that weekend two years ago. A lot of it is luck. With a pill draw you’re at the mercy of whatever you draw. That makes it tough. Sometimes you can’t control your destiny. You have to have luck on your side. We’ve been getting better in the midget deal so with a little luck I’m confident we’ll have a great week.”
Scelzi will follow the Chili Bowl Nationals by hopping on a plane to head to Australia, where he will drive for Domain Ramsey and Bernie Stuebgen in the President’s Cup – an event he won last year for his first international triumph – and the Kings Challenge prior to the famed Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic.
“I love Australia,” Scelzi said. “I have so much fun. The fans are so involved and the people are so nice. I had a blast last year. This isn’t a long trip, but I get to see my friends and get to race. I’m looking forward to going with Bernie and hopefully being as competitive as we were last year.”
