Giovanni Scelzi Claims Outlaw Feature, Charges from 20th to 2nd in Nonwing
Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (June 1, 2014) – Despite an early throttle issue, Giovanni Scelzi capped his season debut at Delta Speedway with a pair of spectacular performances last Saturday.
“We definitely had the car to win both classes,” he said. “It was a great night and we couldn’t ask for much more.”
The night began with the throttle hanging on Scelzi as he attempted to qualify his nonwing outlaw micro sprint. Scelzi was unable to record a qualifying time and he was forced to start at the back for the remainder of the night.
However, that was only a minor setback as he rallied from ninth to fourth place in his heat race before putting on a show in the main event. Scelzi started the 30-lap feature in the 20th position, but he quickly worked his way to the front.
“Everyone else was rolling through the middle,” he said. “We were passing them on the cushion. We were definitely the fastest car in the race.”
Scelzi maneuvered from 20th to the runner-up spot in the first 10 laps before he and the eventual winner battled back and forth with several slide jobs throughout the final 20 laps.
“I just wasn’t aggressive enough to get the win,” said Scelzi, who finished with a second-place result.
The highlight of the night came in the outlaw class, which Scelzi dominated to capture his third win of the season.
Scelzi set quick time in qualifying and he advanced from fourth to third place in his heat race. After starting on the outside of the second row for the 30-lap main event, Scelzi headed to the lead in a hurry.
“The cushion was getting way up there,” he said. “It didn’t really build a ledge. It just got rough up there and it was hooked up. I got to second right off the bat. I slid for the lead around Lap 4 or 5 and walked away from it.”
Scelzi’s dominant win was his first career triumph in the 600cc division at Delta Speedway.
“We were great in winged,” he said. “I don’t think we could have been much better.”
