Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2014) – Giovanni Scelzi powered to a standout performance last weekend during the Turkey Bowl at Delta Speedway.
Scelzi scored his fifth feature victory of the season and he earned a pair of podium finishes during micro sprint action at the bullring.
“It was a really, really good weekend,” he said. “I wish we could have won both of the races, but to win one, I was really happy.”
The weekend kicked off on Friday when Scelzi maneuvered from sixth to second place in his nonwing heat race.
“The car was really, really good,” he said. “In the heat race we weren’t quite as good as first place. We got pretty much all the cars on the start. I was moving around on the race track to see where the car would work. I was trying to be smart.”
Scelzi then won his nonwing qualifier after starting on the outside of the second row. That gave him the most overall points and the pole position for Saturday’s $1,000-to-win main event.
“The top was the preferred line on the start,” he said of the feature. “Another driver got by me on the start and I ran him down. I got better and better as the race went on and we rolled by him. I got to his bumper down the backstretch and slid him in turns three and four.”
Scelzi took the lead approximately one quarter of the way through the 40-lap feature and he maintained the top spot for the remainder of the race despite a close call in the final laps.
“The last three laps it was blowing up,” he said. “Something happened and it was slowing down. I was doing everything I could to stay up front. Another driver tried to slide me in turns one and two on the final lap, but I stayed on the gas and drove around him.”
Scelzi’s weekend in his winged micro sprint didn’t start as well. On Friday he advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race and he finished fourth in a qualifier, which put him 14th in overall points heading into Saturday’s feature.
Scelzi clawed into the top 10 in the first handful of laps and he climbed into third place with approximately 10 laps remaining.
“We were a little too tight so I couldn’t drive it as hard as I like to,” he said. “I got through traffic as quick as I could. I could go top, bottom, middle. I was kinda all over the place getting through traffic. There was a pretty good gap that I wasn’t able to make up on the leader once I got to third.”
Scelzi’s third-place finish gave him a podium result in every feature he competed in at Delta Speedway this season.
He will wrap up this season Nov. 14-15 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif.
