Inside Line Promotions – LEMOORE, Calif. (March 31, 2014) – Giovanni Scelzi wasn’t planning to start his season last weekend, but it’s a good thing he did.

After the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., was cancelled because of rain, it opened Saturday night for Scelzi, who had originally planned to crew for his older brother at the sprint car race.

The Scelzi family finalized the micro sprint for Giovanni and headed to Lemoore Raceway, which avoided the stormy weather.

“We weren’t even thinking of running the race,” he said. “We threw our car together and rolled out there and luckily got the win.”

Scelzi continued his hot streak from the Tulsa Shootout in January by scoring his first victory of the season in the nonwing outlaw main event and he followed that up by placing fourth in the outlaw main event during double duty.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “My confidence is really high right now. Hopefully we can keep it up the rest of the season.”

Scelzi timed in second quickest during nonwing outlaw qualifying and he advanced from fourth to second place in his heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap main event.

“I hung out in second the first 10 laps,” he said. “I fell back to fourth and then slid two for the price of one.”

Around the midpoint of the feature, Scelzi executed a slide job in turns one and two to charge from fourth to second. He then slid the leader in the same spot the following lap to take over the top spot.

“Most everyone was running the fence,” he said. “That’s where I was the best.”

Scelzi pulled away to earn the victory.

He also put together a top-notch performance in the outlaw class. Scelzi qualified seventh quickest and finished second in his heat race, which started him on the outside of the third row for the main event.

After losing a couple of positions in the opening laps, Scelzi focused on the bottom groove.

“Everyone was on the top,” he said. “I started rolling the bottom and drove back to fourth.”

Scelzi ended his night with a fourth-place finish to earn a pair of top fives at the event.

His next race is scheduled for April 18 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif.
