The Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown
The defending American Canadian Tour champion Wayne Helliwell Jr. has been invited to the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown at Richmond International Raceway (RIR). The Dover, NH pilot was contacted by NASCAR Director of Weekly Racing Lynn Carroll last week to offer Helliwell a chance to compete against the star studded field of NASCAR veterans and short track racers from around the country. A driver lineup that includes Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Michael Waltrip and some of the top K&N and weekly series champions from different regions of the country.
The event which features NASCAR style late model cars posses a challenge for Helliwell to find a ride with a compatible car. Helliwell has said that team owner Bruce Bernhardt has been burning up phones trying to find a ride so his driver can compete for such a great event. "Similar to the Battle at the Beach event, are cars don’t fit into that rule book for this race. We have feelers out around the south to try and put something together. But in all honesty it most likely won’t happen. To be thought of for an event like this makes just getting the call pretty special. It’s for such a great cause and against some the best racers in the country. Maybe we can come up with something... said Helliwell.”
2013 will mark the 3rd annual event which takes place on Thursday , April 25th at the famed ¾ mile d-shaped Virginia oval. The showdown, which serves as a fundraiser for the Denny Hamlin Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis helps raise funds and awareness to accelerate the Denny Hamlin Cystic Fibrosis Research Lab’s ability to bring new therapies to cystic fibrosis patients.
