Wayne Helliwell Jr
#10 and counting...
Wayne Helliwell Jr. And the Bruce Bernhardt owned Ford Fusion 27nh team have racked up 12 wins over all in almost as many races heading into weekly action at Canaan Fair Speedway. A rare single 50 lap feature event was on the schedule of events at the New Hampshire oval this past Saturday.
Canaan Fair's single feature nights include a unique format that qualify the top 4 cars from each heat race into a dash for extra points towards to the overall championship. Helliwell who held a 49 point lead in the overall standings continues to build his points lead as the team nears a conflicting race event with American Canaidan Tour when the series heads to Sanair Super Speedway in St-Pie, QC in the upcoming weeks ahead.
The Familiar bright orange Ekeys-4-Cars, Unique Ford would roll from the 8th position in the second 10 lap heat race; Helliwell would battle his way to the front with just two laps to go he would make the pass into final transfer spot and take over 3rd as the field completed the final lap.
The 10 lap 8 car semi-feature dash for points was next up; as usual he would start from the back row in the 7th position. With nowhere to go as the field raced double file through-out the event Helliwell would finish in the 4th position.
A 16 car field headed in to the 50 lap Whelen All-American feature event. Starting from the 11th position Helliwell would bid his time as he progressed to the front of the field. As the field strung out the 27NH machine would ride in 4th spot in till after halfway point. Passing cars only when the opportunity allowed.
Helliwell would stalk race long leader Scott MacMichael for multiple laps, getting to the inside of him with 10 laps to go. A pair of late race restarts were all but a formality as Helliwell would go on to take win #10 in 11 starts in 2012 at Canaan Fair Speedway. The win would extend his points lead to 58 over the 7NH of MacMichael giving the team basically a one race cushion in the tracks championship chase.
“This is unreal…, Helliwell said in victory lane. “We were very conservative tonight, both with our tire selection and how we raced. We have a lot of laps on some of these tires and we are trying to be smart about how we use them. That was hard fought, fun race tonight… I’m proud of the guys. We keep taking positive steps forward as the season gets down to crunch time. I think there are only 6 races left here; realistically we will most likely only make five so we need to get all we can every race.” Helliwell laughed and said “no pressure though, right…”
The Bernhardt Motorsports team will head back to the wooded New Hampshire oval next Saturday night as they try and add more wins to there already impressive season.
