Wayne Helliwell Jr
The streak ends at 9
Domination is not a word used often when talking about racing more often than not; Wayne Helliwell Jr.'s name and that word have been used almost on a weekly basis around New England in 2012. From leading all 150 laps of last weekends American Canadian Tour event at White Mountain Motorsports Park or his ridiculous streak of 8 consecutive wins at Canaan Fair Speedway. Helliwell has seemingly dominated every event he has run since a 30th place finish at Oxford plains Speedway more than a month ago.
The Bruce Bernhardt owned Ekeys-4-Cars, Unique Ford team headed back to Canaan Fair Speedway Saturday night after a week off from the northern New Hampshire oval. Twin 30 lap events where once again on the card as the track continues to make ground up in NASCAR Whelen All-American series events. Helliwell currently sits 17th in the national standings with only 14 starts to his credit.
Looking to continue his unbeaten streak Helliwell would start from the 14th position in the first event on the night. By lap 12 he was running 8th. With no where to pass Helliwell spent much of the first half of the event stuck in traffic. By lap 20 he was up to the 5th spot and continued his march forward as the caution flag would fly on lap 25. Lining up second on the restart Helliwell would clear Joshua Ball down the back stretch and go on uncontested to make it 9 straight victories. A visible excited Helliwell in victory lane just shook his head, "We'll the streak is still alive… Each week we come back and look at whats ahead of us and say out loud, today it will end. Some how we made it through there and picked up another win. I'm excited for everyone involved with this thing, one more to go…"
Feature #2 on the night had Helliwell roll from the 12th starting spot. Much like the first event he would battle his way to front having no where to go as the field ran side by side for multiple laps. With the field strung out a much needed yellow would fly on lap 20. Helliwell would work his way into the 3rd position and start to track down the leaders and simply run out of laps; ending the amazing streak of wins at 9 with a 3rd place finish. "If 3rd place is a bad night for us… i'll take it, joked Heliwell to the crowd on the front stretch after the race. " We've had an unreal run here… This is something to be proud of. It's time to start a new streak. The 3rd place finish gave him the overall win and max points for the night as he now leads the points standings by 52 over the 7NH of Scott Macmichael.
Talking about the nights events Helliwell's thoughts of how the race played out were frustrating to him. "You have to be so patient out there, guys are running side-by-side lap after and there is no where to go; it gets frustrating. I could have gone three wide a bunch tonight. But I don't race like that and don't want people to race me like that so i just waited. I'm not going to put someone else in that position. It's part of it regardless of how it plays out. Just waiting got us a 3rd place tonight and thats fine, the car is in one piece. We fight to see another week."
The Bernhardt Motorsports team will be back at Canaan Fair next Saturday as they try and start a new streak. More information can be found at: http://www.canaanspeedways.com/home.html
