Wayne Helliwell Jr
First Win-g of 2012
Wayne Helliwell Jr. headed into this past Friday night winless in the 350 super modified division at Lee USA Speedway in 2012; a wild and crazy night would change that.
Riding high into the New Hampshire oval after being named 10th overall in the June edition of the NASCAR Hunter Index Helliwell was looking to improve on some inconsistencies on the start of the season.
The heat race provided some challenges on the first lap as issues with a Tony Carroll's car caused a 4 wide situation at the rear of the field and as a result forced Helliwell to the pit area with a rubbing nerf bar on the right rear tire. However on this night the Small Block Supers were not parking in there typical place; in the infield. Instead they were parking in the upper pit area behind the stands, and because of it if someone had to pit during a heat race you were not aloud not back out. So without even completing a lap Helliwell was credited with a 5th place finish in the Heat.
"It's really frustrating when people race like that… There are a bunch of cars wrecked for no reason right now. It's disappointing people can't have some patiences on lap 1 of a race, never mind a heat race, said Helliwell.
The feature would see the #21 Scherbon Consolidated Inc car start 7th on the grid. Wasting little time Helliwell worked his way to 2nd before a caution before halfway. On the restart He would power by Sparky Maciver on the outside and cruse to his first win of the season at Lee USA Speedway.
"What a long night this was… said Helliwell. "We really needed this win. I'm happy for the Witkums and all the support of the team. This has been a long time coming. We've struggled some this year with trying some things on the car and i think we are finally turning the corner."
As Helliwell continues to climb the National ranking in the NASCAR Whelen All-American series, next friday night at Lee USA Speedway will be the only NASCAR event of the weekend for him. His Saturday night duties at the northern New Hampshire oval Canaan Fair Speedway have the night off.
The Winged warriors are back in action next Friday night for more weekly racing series at Lee USA Speedway. Post time 7:00pm https://www.leeusaspeedway.com
