The streak rolls on...
Wayne Helliwell Jr. and the Bruce Bernhardt owned Ekeys-4-Cars, Unique Ford team headed back to Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH hoping to keep their winning streak alive this past Saturday night. Helliwell who had reeled off 6 consecutive victories and taken over the top spot in the New Hampshire NASCAR Whelen All-American standings, was not ready to rest on the team’s success in 2012.
Double features were once again on tap; twin 35 lap events would see Helliwell start from 18th starting position in the first event. Being patient and working his way through the field he would join the top 10 just halfway through the event. 10 laps later he was 5th and continued his march to front; race long leader AJ Panessiti would have a full straight away on Helliwell when he grabbed second place. With 31 laps complete and the straight away advantage cut in half the yellow would fly and bring the front row side by side. On the restart Helliwell would rocket by on the outside lane by the time the field exited turn two and cruise to win #7 on the year. “what a race,” said Helliwell in victory lane. “I thought to myself before we started… there is no way we can win this. I really tried to save my tires the whole race, starting way back there and knowing we had two races it was important to be smart and not take chances. I know we were gaining on AJ before the yellow, I think it would have been close if I could have caught him or not. It all worked out, that was a lot of fun.”
Race #2 would have Helliwell roll from the 12th starting position; the early stages of the event would be plagued by big wrecks and a lengthy red flag as many of the top points competitors took heavy damage. Just as the first race Helliwell would work his way to the front of the field by halfway. Pressuring Scott MacMichael’s for many laps, Helliwell would get to the inside of the 7NH and would go on to checkered flag unchallenged for the his 8th consecutive win and extending his current point lead at the New Hampshire oval. “This is just unreal, Helliwell said. I have thank Bruce and the whole crew for the work to get here. The car was great tonight… I’m running out of things to say about how crazy this has been. This will be a big boast for the National standings I’m sure... I’m excited about that.” The boast he was referring to was a jump from 33rd in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National standings to 11th over all.
Helliwell and the Bernhardt Motorsports team will be off this weekend at Canaan Fair Speedway; but not off from racing as they turn their attention back to the American Canadian Tour Series. The team travels to White Mountain Motorsports Park in Woodstock, NH for round #5 on the season. Helliwell holds a slim 2 point margin over Hudson, New Hampshire’s Joey Pole. Helliwell hopes to better his 2011 finish of second to find victory lane for the 2nd time in 2012.
