Wayne Helliwell Jr.'s rapid forward progress to the top of the New Hampshire NASCAR Whelen All-American points lead and a jump from 99th in overall national standings to 33rd after this past weekend’s racing action; has people taking notice. All of this in just the last four weeks. A 14 member panel of the motorsports media from across the country vote once a month to determine the nation’s top drivers and rate them for their performance in what is called the Hunter Index. The June edition of the NASCAR Hunter Index places Helliwell 10th in the county; recognizing his outstanding performance in a NASCAR touring and/or regional series. The Hunter Index is named after the late Jim Hunter a long time NASCAR employee. http://hometracks.nascar.com/June_Hunter-Index_Dylan-Kwasniewski_Showing_No_Signs_Of_Slowing

Helliwell's season totals of 5 wins, 8 top 5's, and 9 top 10's in 9 starts has him just 22 points out of the top 25 in North America and 81 out of the top 10. Behind the wheel of the Bruce Bernhardt owned machine he has won the last 6 consecutive races at New Hampshire's Canaan Fair Speedway; which has him leading the points at the northern oval. In fact he is the only driver to reach victory lane in the late model division this year at the track.

Helliwell who also pilots a open wheel super modified for Ed & Bobby Witkum at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH every Friday night sits second in the overall season stands. He can be found around New England racing 3 times a week or more trying to accumulate as many points as he can; but he's quick to point out things can change in a hurry.
" This is a really big surprise… it's pretty cool to even be looked at all. To even be considered on this list is a big deal. I can't believe the jump in the standings. Just a few weeks ago i was thinking we would finish around the 50's [overall] for the season, but the car counts at Canaan [Fair Speedway] have been really good. There really are so many variables to this whole thing, you never know what will happen… All we can do is just keep doing what we have been, we'll just keep working hard at it," said Helliwell.

Helliwell will continue his quest for multiple track championships, a New Hampshire State and National NASCAR Whelen All-American tiles this upcoming weeknd. Friday night at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH and Saturday at Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH for twin 35's.
