Double Down
Saturday night the Bruce Bernhardt owned team and driver Wayne Helliwell Jr. headed back to the site of their $5,000 payday for round one of the 2012 points battle at Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH. Looking to continue their winning ways and hot streak the team would once again rise to the occasion.
With twin 35 lap feature events on the card Helliwell would roll from 5th starting position to start the first event. Playing the patients game he would ride in 3rd spot for much of the event. Making the pass for 2nd on lap 17 Helliwell would battle to the outside of Donnie Lashua to take the lead on lap 22 and cruse to a second victory in just 7days at the northern New Hampshire oval. "That was good battle with Donnie [Lashua] for the win, said Wayne. "The car was really good.. it always helps to start up front too."
Helliwell would roll off in the 11th spot for the second 35 lap event of the night. He would work his way thru the field and while running 5th the lone caution flag would fly with seven laps remaining. Utilizing the double file restarts he would rocket in to 2nd place and track down race long leader Chris Bergeron; the pair would battle side by side for 3 laps straight before Helliwell could complete the pass. While battling side by side the two touched repeatly in till Helliwell cleared Bergeron on the outside lane to go on uncontested and pick up his third straight win. When asked about the contact between the two 27's Helliwell had this to say, "I thought maybe I was crowding him down, but my guys said that i was way up the track. He got into us going into [turn] three and I about lost it. I don't like to race like that… I try and treat people with repsect, but i'll race however they want to."
By sweeping both feature events Helliwell has won all three late model events held at the track so far in 2012 and now holds a slim points lead headed into week two of action next Saturday night. "I'm looking forward to next week, this car is so well balanced… The turn speed in it is unreal. This is such a momentum race track its all about turn speed here. We're looking forward to it."
