Wayne Helliwell Jr
Opening Night
This past Friday night kicked off Wayne Helliwell Jr.’s 2012 quest for his 9th Lee USA Speedway track championship and the NASCAR Whelen All-American series chase for state and national championships. Once again Helliwell was behind the wheel the Ed and Bobby Witkum owned Scherbon Consolidated Inc 350 Small Block Supermodified.
With lots of new faces and cars in the pit area 2012 plans to be another challenging year to defend his track championship in the white and blue 21 machine. Random draw for the opening event would set the line-ups for heat races. From the pole Helliwell would win the by half a straight away; putting the changes made over the winter through their race pass for the first time. “We made a lot of improvements to the car this year. It responded really well to what we did,” said Wayne.
The feature time would bring a 10 car inversion to the 14 car field, but after 3 cars elected to start tail Helliwell would roll off 6th on the grid. With a couple of quick yellows the feature would find it’s pace and the cars would get strung out around the 3/8ths mile oval. Settling into 3rd place Helliwell would pressure Dave Sanborn to the finish. With no cautions to the end Mike Ordway Jr. would grab the win followed by Dave Sanborn and Helliwell to round out the top three. “We had a really bad aero push in traffic,” Helliwell said about his cars handling. “The car was fine when I was alone but when I got behind Dave [Sanborn] we go really tight. I think if we had a restart I could have gotten them… It’s a solid start to the year, we’ll take it.”
Round two of the Lee USA Speedway’s season kicks off this Friday 4/18/12 at 7:05pm. More information can be found at: http://leeusaspeedway.com/
