Wayne Helliwell Jr
It's Time for #9.
This Friday Wayne Helliwell Jr’s busy schedule will kick into another gear as he starts his pursuit for his 9th Lee USA Speedway track championship and his third straight NASCAR Whelen All-American New Hampshire state title. Wayne will once again be behind the wheel of the Scherbon Consolidated Inc, Ed and Bobby Witkum owned 350 Small Block Supermodified. 2011 marked the first full season piloting one of the open wheeled winged machines. Finishing no worse that 7th in seventeen races, consistency brought first time championships to the Witkum’s brothers after 20 years of racing. Ending the year with 3 wins, 14 top 5’s, and 17 top 10’s.
Wayne plans to compete every Friday night at the Lee, NH oval as well as Saturday’s at the Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, NH. Wayne will pilot familiar bright orange 27NH Bruce Bernhardt owned Ford Fusion Late Model. Canaan Fair Speedway is New Hampshire’s newest NASCAR sanctioned track and with it comes and opportunity to compete for a Whelen All-American national title. Between both cars Wayne feels this gives him a legitimate chance at competing in enough events to possible contend for more than just a state title. “You need upwards of 30 races to even try and compete for the National title, said Wayne. “There are a lot of factors that go into those 30 races to make up those points so we will see what happens?” Wayne’s unique opportunity to race two competently different type’s cars for one title is not lost on him. “I’m not sure if someone has ever driven such different types of cars for one goal before.. maybe dirt and asphalt but this would be right up there. I have two great teams behind me and we are set to give it a shot.”
