Helms Charges to Top 10 at Atomic During All Star Season Finale

Inside Line Promotions – CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (Oct. 25, 2016) – Caleb Helms earned his sixth top-10 finish of the season last Saturday at Atomic Speedway during the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions season finale.

Inclement weather forced Friday’s on-track activities to be delayed, making the All Star season finale a one-day show. Helms kicked off Saturday’s event timing in eighth quickest out of 48 sprint cars, which ranked fourth quickest in his group.

“We were actually one of the first cars to go to the top in qualifying,” he said. “I wanted to get a good qualifying lap in first and then see what the high side would do, but it ended up working for us.”

For the second week in a row, a strong qualifying effort put Helms on the pole of the heat race. Unfortunately, Helms got upside down battling for one of the two lock-in positions into the dash.

“I didn’t get as good of a start as I wanted,” he said. “We were trying to get back around Lee (Jacobs) and I was going to try the top again, but didn’t get high enough and hit one of the ruts and that sent us flipping. It ended up bending the frame and breaking off the wing posts, but we had guys from other teams come and help us out a lot to get back out for the B Main.”

Helms started on the pole of the B Main and he finished second, which gave him a transfer into the back of the A Main.

“I would have been able to win the B Main, but we ran out of fuel coming to the last lap and just barely made it,” he said.

Helms started the 35-lap main event from the 22nd starting position. He quickly maneuvered his way into the top 15. Just past the halfway point Helms broke into the top 10 and he ran seventh for a portion later in the feature. Helms capped the night by placing 10th, which advanced a dozen spots from his starting position.

“We started the feature toward the back and within a few laps the front nose wing fell down and I drove the rest of the race like that,” he said. “We started off tight, too, and I was able to make some adjustments and made up ground.

“We had raced our way up to seventh and was catching the leaders before a red flag came out. I had a flat right rear and had to come into the hot pit during the open red, but we still were able to come back and salvage a top 10.”
