Teaching Through Sprint Cars
The Legend Racing Team believes in the value of education. Team owner, Jim Goerges has provided numerous tours of the facilities at Precision Tool Technologies to local school groups. Brian Goerges and Pequot Tool and Manufacturing have done the same. Our driver, Jared, has also helped by bringing the car out to Pillager Area Charter School where crew chief Greg Zimmerman teaches high school mathematics. Greg has used his experience with sprint cars to provide relevance to many of the lessons he teaches in class. We bring the car out to the school about once a year to give students some up close, hands on learning experiences. The Legend Racing Team uses many of the skills we acquired in high school on a regular basis and it is great for kids to see examples of these skills being used.
On February 13, Greg and Jared hauled the car to Duluth, MN for the annual Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs (MAAP) professional development conference. We gave a 60 minute presentation to a group of 15 alternative education practitioners. The focus of the presentation was to provide tools for other teachers to provide engaging learning opportunities for students who might be interested in racing. Greg linked skills used to run a successful sprint car team with Minnesota high school learning standards in many curriculum areas including math, science, language arts, health, art, and character education.
We have lessons designed around each of these learning standards and would be more than willing to bring the car to other school sites and do presentations for students. If you are interested in having the Legend Racing #9 visit your school, or if you are associated with a business and would like to provide sponsorship for these visits, please contact us!
