Wood Notches Three Straight Top 10s at Jackson Speedway and Huset’s Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Sept. 3, 2013) – Cole Wood put together one of his most consistent weeks of the season during a pair of doubleheaders at Jackson Speedway in Jackson, Minn., and at Huset’s Speedway.

Wood earned a top five and three top-10 finishes in the four races at the two challenging tracks.

“I was pretty pleased with it,” he said. “Both times at Huset’s were super tough tracks that I’ve never experienced. I learned a bunch and we’ll carry it on.”

Wood opened the weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour 35th annual Jackson Nationals at Jackson Speedway on Friday.

After maneuvering from third to second place in his heat race, Wood missed a spot in the feature redraw by only one position. He started ninth in the main event and hung in the top 10 despite an issue until the closing laps.

“We had a plug wire off all of the race,” he said. “For 23 laps we ran on seven cylinders. A yellow came out with a couple laps to go and the car finally died going back the frontstretch. It died putting around under yellow.”

Wood went to the work area and his crew put the wire back on, but Wood was forced to start at the back of the field and finished 18th.

He continued to improve the following night after placing third in his heat race and third in a B Main, which earned him the final transfer to the main event. Wood started 21st and charged to a ninth-place result on the tricky half-mile track.

“The car was just really good,” he said. “I was really good coming off the corner out of (turn) four and I could get underneath people. That was definitely our best finish there.”

The team headed to Huset’s Speedway on Sunday to kick off a doubleheader at the high-banked track. In 410ci competition, Wood qualified seventh quickest and placed fourth in his heat race. He lined up on the outside of the third row for the 25-lap feature, which was mostly spent hugging the inside line.

“Me and Austin McCarl got into it on the backstretch,” he said. “I felt like he came up and I got into the fence and a little sideways. It cost us a bunch of spots. It was just one lane around the bottom so everybody was so close.”

Wood held on for his second-straight ninth-place finish, which marked his 15th top 10 of the season.

He wrapped up the week in 360ci competition on Monday at Huset’s Speedway. Wood charged from third to win his first heat race at the track. He then pulled the No. 1 in a random draw, which started all of the heat race winners up front for the main event.

Wood led the first handful of laps before a car drove around him on outside.

“On the restart I actually went to the bottom and one guy went around me on the top so I moved up,” he said. “I was running the top and the rubber came in on the bottom. There was a top, but it was so far around that it was still pretty slow.”

Wood maintained a podium position until losing a couple additional spots after jumping the cushion. He finished with a fifth-place result, which was his eight top five of the year.

Wood is scheduled to compete at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday with the Midwest Open Wheel Association, and on Sunday at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., for the Nebraska Cup. This will be his first time competing at either track.
