Wood Looks for Experience to Help Him at Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas. (Oct. 21, 2013) – Cole Wood is looking to erase a sour taste from his mouth as he enters this week’s 26th Annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

The $15,000-to-win event with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., which runs from Wednesday through Saturday, offers a new opportunity after learning for a year on the road.

“We’ve learned a whole bunch about slick tracks so I think we’ll be a lot better off,” Wood said. “Making a feature at this race is a huge deal.”

Last year Wood finished in the D Main of the event, which annually draws more than 100 of the top sprint car drivers in the country. This year’s goals include a top-10 finish.

“It was one of my first experiences with a slick track in a sprint car,” he said of last season’s Short Track Nationals. “I hadn’t raced like that anywhere before.

“There’s going to be 100-some cars so to be in the top 10 is huge. The car is going to have to be really good and I’m going to have to be on my game in the slick with throttle control.”

Wood is coming off a frustrating night that was marred by a parts failure at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday. After Friday’s opening round of the 40th annual Winter Nationals was cancelled because of rain, Wood lined up fifth in his Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour heat race on Saturday.

However, a couple of laps into his heat race he spun around when the right front spindle broke and the wheel came off in turn four.

“I think the car was getting a lot better,” he said. “On the second lap we started to really get the bottom figured out and I thought we could move forward a bit. It spun out coming out of the corner. We had to switch the front axle, but that was the only thing that was broken.”

He was unable to finish his heat race and placed fifth, which relegated him to the back of a B Main.

“I started 12th and I just kinda stayed in my own area,” he said. “Everybody was down on the bottom and you couldn’t really move that much.”

Wood finished 11th in the B Main to end his night on the fast track. He remains ninth in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings.
