Wood Wins 10th Heat Race, Records 13th Top 10 of Season at Salina Highbanks Speedway
Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Okla. (Aug. 19, 2013) – Following a frustrating last few weeks, Cole Wood rebounded on Saturday during his first-ever race at Salina Highbanks Speedway with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Wood powered to his 10th heat race win of the season and finished eighth in the feature to notch his 13th top-10 result of the season.
“I felt pretty good about it,” he said. “It was definitely a pick up from everything we’ve had happened. After a couple of bad weeks, I was all right with that.”
Wood drew the second-lowest number during the pill draw, which put him on the pole of the second heat race.
“The guy on the outside got the jump on me,” he said. “I slid him going into (turn) one and led my whole heat race.”
The heat race win locked Wood into the feature and earned him enough points to be in the feature redraw, which lined up the first four rows of the main event. Wood pulled the No. 7 to start on the inside of the fourth row.
“I was running fifth the whole race,” he said. “With two laps to go there was a caution. I tried to pass a lapped car. He went to the bottom. I went to the top and a couple of cars got by me.
“I was really good up top pretty much the whole night. Toward the end of the race everybody went to the bottom. When I tried to go to the bottom I realized I hadn’t run a lap down there all night. I should have tried it in hot laps. There was a huge difference.”
Wood and the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour are scheduled to compete at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Thursday and at Lexington 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tenn., on Saturday.
Wood claimed his heat race and placed 10th in the feature during his only race this season at I-30 Speedway. He hasn’t ever been to Lexington 104 Speedway.
