Wood Rides Roller Coaster Through 53rd annual FVP Knoxville Nationals
Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 12, 2013) – Cole Wood said his first time at the 410 Knoxville Nationals was up and down.
“I’d say it was a roller coaster,” he said. “We had some really great things and we had some really bad things.”
The 53rd annual FVP Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway started on a sour note for Wood during his preliminary night on Wednesday.
“We kind of dug ourselves a hole in our qualifying night,” he said. “We blew up a motor in qualifying and then suffered through the heat race. We got the gear and everything figured out for this other motor we put in. That’s our short track motor.”
After qualifying 42nd quickest and finishing ninth in his heat race, Wood transferred from the C Main to the back of the B Main. He then charged from 23rd to 15th in the consolation race.
The team continued to improve on Friday, when Wood qualified 35th quickest of the 71 competitors and he ended eighth in his heat race. He then maneuvered from ninth to fourth in the B Main, missing a transfer to the feature by only one position.
“It was a good run for us,” he said. “I learned a ton and had some fun.”
Wood started Saturday’s finale 10th in the C Main, which transferred the top four to the back of the B Main.
“I think the car was really good,” he said. “I got tangled with some guy and hit the wall on the second lap. I broke the right rear shock and Jacobs Ladder. I came in the pits and changed that stuff.”
Wood restarted at the back of the pack and rebounded to place 13th.
“I think we had a car to transfer, I just got in trouble early,” he said. “I think the car got better with more laps. I got really, really comfortable up on the cushion.”
Wood is scheduled to compete on Saturday at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
