Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 17, 2013) – It’s been an arduous last couple of weeks of travel and racing for Cole Wood and the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Embarking among the annual summer trip to the Northwest, Wood and the premier 360 sprint car series tackled a pair of events in Montana last week before a weekend doubleheader at Grays Harbor Raceway, which was taped for a delayed television broadcast by Lucas Oil Productions.

A week ago Tuesday, Billings Motorsports Park in Billings, Mont., hosted a race that was co-sanctioned with the brand new ASCS Frontier Region.

Wood charged from sixth to third place in his heat race, which earned him enough points into the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 5 in the random draw to start the main event on the inside of the third row.

“I was running the bottom all the way around the track,” he said. “You really had to slow down and make your car rotate. Somebody tried to throw a slide job in (turns) one or two and hit me and pushed me off the track. Two or three cars got by and I think I lost a few more spots. We were just too loose.”

Wood finished 11th to narrowly miss his 13th top-10 result of the season.

He quickly maneuvered from third to win his ninth heat race of the season the following night at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont. That also placed him in the feature redraw, where he nabbed the No. 4 to start on the outside of the second row.

“I think we had the car set up for a track that was going to be rubber down,” he said. “I ran pretty good for the first quarter of the race.”

Wood spun prior to the midpoint of the feature and had to tag the back of the field. He rallied to finish 18th.

“About 10 laps to go the rubber came down and our car got really good,” he said. “I think that’s when we passed some of those cars.”

After spending Thursday traveling to Washington, Friday kicked off the Grays Harbor Raceway doubleheader in front of the television cameras.

Wood finished a close second in his heat race to miss advancing to the feature redraw by only two positions. He started on the outside of the fifth row in the main event and ended 13th.

On Saturday, Wood placed third in his heat race and started the 30-lap feature on the outside of the seventh row.

“Honestly I think Saturday’s feature we were going to be good,” he said. “The Oj car got sideways on the cushion, came back off the cushion and got in my right rear to spin me out. I had to go to the back. We were running pretty good after that, probably 14th. Then the throttle spring on the injection came off and we got over the cushion and spun out.”

Wood was relegated to the pits early and finished 17th.

He and the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour are slated to compete at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., on Friday and Saturday. The doubleheader is also scheduled to be taped for a delayed television broadcast.
