On the racing side of things, he actually came home off the road in 1992, sold all of his equipment and bought his first racing go kart. He raced several years until a bad crash left him with his collar bone severed in 2 places, 3 broken ribs and a concussion. This was during the time he was playing with Jett Williams (Hank Williams daughter) and the Drifting Cowboys (Hank Williams Sr.'s band) He was unable to play for over 13 weeks. The following year he began racing Champ Karts and did very well that first season but sadly, his race trailer was stolen with all his racing equipment that including the new Champ Kart. Gary's passion for racing continued as he was able to race a few off-road races in a single seat 1600 cc race buggy. Gary refocused on his recording career but continued to have a strong passion for racing. He later helped his son Kyle race Quarter Midgets in Nashville, TN for 2 seasons. In 2019 he raced an OWM for his good friend Dink McKeehan near Atlanta, GA. Gary was to race several races with that team but unfortunately COVID came along and traveling to GA from MN was too difficult.
Gary has always had a passion for the Legend cars and raced two seasons at Hawkeye Downs in the #27 Legend car. The 2021 season at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Nashville, TN. In 2022 he continued to race the legends class.
Currently in 2023 Gary is racing a Mid Am Sportsman car with the same #27 on the side.. keep up with him at www.garywestmusic.com/racing
