CALIFORNIA, Mo. – With just two races left this season at Double-X Speedway, defending sprint car champion Jonathan Cornell is doing all he can to climb back into the top spot in the points standings. Missing a race due to a trip to the west coast, the talented Sedalia, Mo. racer is still enveloped in a scramble for the championship thanks to four feature wins and two more top-five finishes in six races there this year.
Sunday’s winning effort started with Cornell on the pole of his heat race, the second of three heats totaling 19 sprints in action. He handily took the checkered in the preliminary race, but the driver ahead of him in the points race, Ricky Stangl, finished just behind him in second to keep the pressure on.
Lining up directly based from heat race finishing order, Cornell’s Kiowa Line Builders No. 28 earned the outside pole to begin the main event. 25 laps would be the distance, but he wasted no time on the start. Reaching turn one first, he skillfully set up shop around the high side of the quarter-mile. Cornell remained steady throughout to nab the victory and propel himself into the upcoming month of special events, starting with the Clyde Wood Memorial next weekend and highlighted by the crown jewel Knoxville Nationals in mid-August.
Jonathan Cornell Racing would like to thank Kiowa Line Builders, Starline Brass, Gas Monkey Tequila, VKCC Motorsports, Yeager's Cycle, Champion Brands, Ostrich Racing Engines, Peak Performance, Kinsler Fuel Injection, Weld Racing, Hoosier Racing Tire, Maxim Chassis, Rod End Supply, Lucas Oil, KSE Racing Products, ButlerBuilt, Factory Kahne Midwest, Duinkerken Farms, Steve Watt Enterprises, R2C Performance Products, Simpson Race Products, Don's Truck Towing & Truck Wash, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions LLC, Outlaw Wings, Sparks Electric Co., SureCoat, Xtreme Fuel Stick, and Steve and Charlie Smith, as well as all of his fans for their continued support.
Cornell is next scheduled to compete at the “Clyde Wood Memorial” on July 26 at Double-X Speedway in California, Mo. with the ASCS Warrior Region in the No. 28 360ci winged sprint entry.
