CALIFORNIA, Mo. – While Jonathan Cornell was away to California, the state, for two weeks, he lost valuable ground in the points standings at Double-X Speedway in California, the city in Missouri. But he’s inching back toward the points lead by way of tremendous finishes in each visit. In five races there this season, he owns a fifth-place finish after starting 22nd, a runner-up two weeks ago, and three triumphs after Sunday’s win.

The “Race for Riley” event began with 19 sprints registered for action. Going from fourth in the first of three heat races, Cornell finished in the second spot. The heads-up lineup put the Sedalia, Mo. native on the outside second row for the 25-lap main event. When the green flag flew, he swiftly moved into second place and set his sights on perennial central Missouri powerhouse Randy Martin. Though Martin would pull away at first, a sequence of cautions early in the race cut down his lead. Following a caution with nine laps complete, Cornell made his move. Powering into turn one on the restart, he came off turn two and down the back straight with the lead. Though the caution periods weren’t over with, Cornell held off all challengers and the Kiowa Line Builders No. 28 would ultimately be parked in front of the flagstand in the winner’s circle.
