Scotty Thiel – Season Opener at 34 Raceway Recap
Saturday April 6th kicked off the 2019 season for the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team as well as the IRA Sprint Car Series. Scotty Thiel has been runner up in IRA points the last three seasons and was excited to get the new season started. After a few hiccups to start the night out, Thiel was able to put himself in a great starting position for the A-main event but an early race incident would make for a struggling finish.
36 cars signed into 34 Raceway and Scotty drew a 31 pill which placed him to go out 15th in the qualifying order. During qualifying, Thiel’s left front brake line was ripped off and caused a little issue in the corners but he was still able to pull off a lap time that was sixth quick on the night. That placed him to start third in the heat race event. At the start of the heat, Thiel got into a greasy part of the race track which costed him a few positions as the field came around to complete the first lap. He was able to regroup himself and begin to charge his way back forward. He battled his way back up to the fifth spot and slid into the fourth spot on the last lap but was not able to hold it off at the finish line. The fifth place finish would still lock him into the A-main event and would also have a spot in the redraw because of his qualifying time. During the redraw, Thiel drew the #2 pill which placed him to start the A-main on the outside of the front row.
The field took the green flag for the nights 25 lap A-main event. Scotty was able to get a great start and pulled out to an early lead. A couple laps later he drove hard into turn one and would end up sliding off the track in turn two. He was able to gather it all back together but fell back to the third position. Two laps later, Thiel was charging hard for the leaders when the lead car would spin out and Scotty had nowhere to go and was collected in the mishap. He went to the work area where the crew checked over the car and sent him back out with a damaged wing and header. Scotty would come back from 23rd position and work his way up to the 12th position at the completion of the race. “I’m not real happy with how the night ended up. We were sixth quick in qualifying without any brakes really so that at least locked us into the redraw. The heat race I just made a mistake early and it costed us some spots. I thought we were going to be good for the main after picking the front row and again I made another mistake when I fell off of two there. I think if we could have stayed up in the lead at that point we would have had a really strong finish, if not the win. I was happy with how the car was working for me tonight but just too many mistakes that costed us a good finish.” Thiel noted after the night.
Next on tap for the STM team will be April 20th at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI with the IRA Sprint Car Series.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE).
