Scotty Thiel – Podium run at Beaver Dam

On Saturday night the Scott Thiel Motorsports team headed to Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI to race with the IRA Sprint Car Series. After an eighth place qualifying run, second place finish in the heat and starting fourth in the main event, driver Scotty Thiel battled for the lead multiple times but fell short and captured a second place finish.

22 cars signed in to Beaver Dam Raceway Saturday night with the IRA Series. Scotty was the seventh car out to qualifying. After a 12.349 lap time, it was 8th quick overall on the night. Thiel would go on to start on the outside front row of the ten lap heat race event. The slick track conditions made it a little difficult to get a good start on the outside row but Thiel would try to make the best of it as he charged his way back forward after falling back a few positions on the first lap. He was working the very top groove on the cushion for the first six laps and pulled alongside the leader but was unable to complete the pass and showed the leader which line he was running. He would go on to settle for a second place run in the heat race and was still able to be in the nightly redraw with his finish. During the redraw, Thiel picked the fourth starting spot for the nights 30 lap A-main contest.

The field took the green flag for the A-main event. Thiel worked through the middle groove and moved up into third right away. A few laps later he slid his way into second and had his sights on the leader. He made his move for the lead just a couple of laps later and began his charge through the quick approaching lap traffic. Thiel led for a little while before getting hung up in lap traffic and fell back to the second position. He kept the leader in his sights and would keep the distance very close. Several restarts occurred during the latter part of the main event which helped the field get bunched back up and the leaders in some clean air. Lap traffic quickly approached again and made the battle for the leader even closer. With two laps to go, Thiel made his charge to the front and closed the gap. The white flag flew, and Thiel stormed around the top groove and was able to get a huge run on the leader coming down the backstretch. He slid into the lead going into turns three and four but was unable to hold his ground as the former leader drove under Scotty. Thiel would cross the line in second place by 0.265 seconds. “We got beat, that’s it. We had a really fast car tonight and I just got hung up in traffic a little too long and fell back to second. We kept him close to us all race and I knew we could have a shot back at the lead if traffic was a factor. I thought we were going to get it there at the end. I just over drove it in turn three and hit that rut which upset the car a little and wasn’t able to hold the line I was going for. Second isn’t bad but I’m just a little disappointed I couldn’t get it done for my team. They worked hard to get us going this good. We’ll try again next week.” Explained Thiel after the main event.

Next up on tap for the #64 STM team starts off this Friday night at the Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo, WI. The team will then head south on Saturday night to the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI to race with the World of Outlaws!

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE).
