Scotty Thiel - Rough Weekend Up North

Scotty and the STM team headed north this past weekend to Amsoil Speedway in Superior, WI and Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI. This was the Northern Swing for the IRA Series. After starting the night out well on Friday, it ended shortly in the main event after getting collected with the turn one wall and that lead to other issues on Saturday night for the team, making for a long headache of a weekend.

21 cars checked into Amsoil Speedway on Friday night. Scotty was the 9th car out to qualify. After putting down a 13.433 lap time it was 3rd quick on the night. That lead Thiel to start 4th in the 10 lap heat race event. Thiel struggled a bit in the heat race and finished 4th but would lock himself into the nightly redraw. During the redraw, he picked the 6th starting position pill for the 30 lap main event. The main event started out decent for Thiel as he launched into the third position within the first few laps of the race. Shortly after, he slid up a little too high in turn one and backed into the wall, causing the car to flip over. The red flag was out, Scotty was fine, but the car needed some help. The crew rushed to get the car fixed but they ran out of time. That would end the night for Thiel and the team.

Saturday night the crew worked hard to get prepared for the 17th annual Richert Memorial event at the Cedar Lake Speedway in Superior, WI. 27 cars signed into that event, Scotty was the 19th car out to qualify. After putting down a 12.492 lap time that was 8th quick overall for the night. However, Scotty would complain about a bad vibration he was feeling in the car and the crew decided to change the engine and not risk anything. They were able to make the engine swap and be prepared for heat race event where he would start on the outside front row. On the initial start, Thiel's engine stumbled and fell back to the third position in turn three. He maintained that position all race long but would lock himself into the main event, missing the redraw by one spot. He would go on to start the 30 lap main event in the 11th position. The field was set for the 30 lap race. Scotty worked the low groove early on but only picked up a couple of spots. He eventually moved up to the top side of the track but began to battle with a temperature issue with the engine. He eventually pulled off the track with only six laps to go as the issue was getting more and more of a concern. "It was just a bad weekend for us. We started off both nights with decent qualifying efforts. Just not sure what all went wrong. I think we have some issues we need to address at the shop with this car and get it all figured out for a long week we have next week." Stated Thiel.

Next on tap for the #64 STM team is a long 3 day race week/weekend. The team will start the trip on Wednesday night at the Route 66 Dirt Track in Joliet, IL and follow that up with a trip to the Clay County Speedway in Spencer, IA on Friday with a trip to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN on Saturday night.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE).
