Scotty Thiel – Top 5 at Cedar Lake!

After a cancelled race night in Oshkosh due to uncontrollable circumstances, the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team traveled north to New Richmond, WI where they would go on to race Saturday evening at the Cedar Lake Speedway. This was the first visit to the track in 2017 as the team plans to race there two more times throughout the season. Scotty and the crew were able to get a great start to the night and that would carry on into the main event where Thiel would record a fourth place finish and his first top five finish in the 2017 season.

25 cars were checked into Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday night. Scotty picked the #1 pill and was the first car out for qualifying. After laying down an 11.635 lap time, which was fourth quick and would place him to start third in the 10 lap heat race event. The green flag dropped and Thiel maintained that third place spot for majority of the race. Lap traffic came into play with only two laps to go. That made for an exciting battle as the top two cars began to battle for position and Scotty reeled his way closer. The lead cars split a lap car and slid up the track and Scotty was able to utilize the bottom groove and pull alongside of the leaders down the backstretch. The momentum wasn’t enough to carry through turns three and four and he would settle for a third place finish. With that finish and the good qualifying effort that elected him to be a part of the nights redraw which places the drivers to start in the first five rows of the main event. Thiel drew the 6th position at the redraw and that’s where he would line up for the 30 lap A-main event. At the start of the A-main event, Scotty quickly got up in the third position in the first lap. He held that position for several laps before an early red flag came out for a car that flipped in turn three. On the restart, Scotty built up speed and slid into the second position in turn three temporarily but wasn’t able to get the grip to hold the spot as they raced down the front stretch. Settling back in third, he tried to work the low groove but lost a spot and fell back to fourth. Several cautions came into play towards the end of the event but Scotty would hold on to the fourth position the entire time. A late race caution set the field for an eight lap shootout. Scotty tried to gain some ground after the restart but was unable to do so and would come across the finish line in the fourth position, capturing his first top five finish of the season!

“We really had a good night tonght. We finally were able to get a good qualifying run and that helped us out all night by being able to start closer to the front. My guys worked hard all night and gave me a great car in the main. The car was really fast but I know I gave up some ground in three but we still are happy about a top five. I cannot thank everyone involved in this program enough for all the support!” Mentioned Thiel after the conclusion of the night.

Next on tap is this coming Saturday, May 13th at the Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, WI with the IRA Sprint Car Series.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE).
