Scotty Thiel - Scores at the Mighty Axe Nationals!

Starting off the Labor Day racing weekend, the Scott Thiel Motorsports team headed to the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway on Friday night. Scotty picked a 23 pill which set him to start 4th in his heat race event. After a tacky track that made for a hard time passing, Scotty finished in the 5th spot. That earned him a 13th place starting spot in the nights 30 lap A-main event.

The field took the green and Thiel began to search around for a fast groove. He passed several cars but wasn't able to run the top groove right away like he wanted to. Several cautions took place and finally after the third caution flew, Thiel was able to restart on the high side of the double file restart. Scotty charged hard in turn one and came from the ninth spot all the way up to fourth! He started to reel the third place car in and caught him a few laps later. He set up for a slide job going into turn and made the pass for the third spot. Coming out of the corner after making the pass, Scotty was hit hard in the right rear tire causing it get punctured. He pulled off and that was it for the night.

The crew loaded up quickly to get back to the shop and finish up some minor things on their ascs car and got the trailer reloaded up for their haul to Brainerd, MN for the Mighty Axe Nationals.

Scotty picked a 42 pill which set him to start 5th in the heat race event. After eight laps of green flag action, Scotty finished in the third spot, giving him an eighth place starting spot for the nights 25 lap A-main event. The crew prepared for an extreme dry slick racing condition. The field took the green flag and Scotty slowly started to pick cars off. An early yellow came out which allowed for the field to bunch back up. Thiel had worked himself up to the fifth position by that time. The race returned to green flag action and lasted until lap 16 when a red flag flew for a car that flipped in corner three. That put Thiel in the third spot for the restart. They went back to green flag action and Scotty slid the second place car going into turn one. He grabbed the second spot and charged hard after the leader. Two laps later Scotty slid for the lead and it was a battle down the back stretch. The second place car dove down on Scotty in turn three but Scotty set him up and took over the top spot coming out of turn four. Thiel began to pull away and would take the checkered flag! After post race inspection, Thiel was found to be eight pounds light on the tracks non-certified scales which had a 14 lbs split from front to back. He was then disqualified due to the light weight.

It was a great run for Scotty and was very unfortunate for the scaling issue. The crew determined what they needed to do to make the proper weight for Sunday's racing action by adding some lead to the car and determining how much more fuel would have been needed.

On Sunday's portion of the Mighty Axe Nationals, Scotty drew a 22 pill which set him to start forth in the heat race event. The track was again, very dry slick and made it pretty difficult for passing. Scotty jumped into the third spot early on in the heat race and would take the checkered flag in that spot, allowing him a sixth place starting spot in the nights 20 lap A-main event. 20 laps was determined due to a smaller amount of cars able to start the A-main, after a few were wrecked during the heat races.

The field took the green flag for the A-main event. Scotty was on a mission and would take over the third spot in only three completed laps. He would then go to take over the second spot one lap later. Scotty caught the leader on lap five and would set up to take over the lead coming out of turn four on the sixth lap of the race. Scotty would not look back and pulled away from the field. The race would go green to checkered and Scotty would take the checkered flag once again! He went across the scales and was 40lbs over weight and the post race celebration took place! The team was ecstatic that they finally were able to take home the infamous Mighty Axe trophy! "It feels really great to take home the Axe! Kind of a bummer about last night with the scaling issue but we passed it tonight and can celebrate! I had an amazing car out there tonight, Jeff set it up well and I could literally drive it where ever I wanted it to go. Can't thank my crew enough for all their hard work to give me a car that was just pure awesome!" Scotty said after Night #2 at the Mighty Axe Nationals.

Beside the two mishaps that took place on Friday and Saturday, it was another exciting weekend for the Scotty Thiel Motorsports #64 team. The crew worked hard all weekend long to keep ahead on the track conditions and provided an great handling car for Scotty. The team will be back on the road Saturday and heading to the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI for the Jerry Richert Memorial race!
