Scotty Thiel - Struggling Short Track Nationals
The 25th Annual Short Track Nationals did not treat the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team how they anticipated. Struggles burdened the team numerous times throughout the week. Scotty drew a 58 pill for his Thursday night qualifier and would be placed to start seventh in the fourth heat race event. The rains came down early on the race action. The series had each heat run the track back in and then go on to complete their heat race. The track was pretty slick when Scotty's heat race pushed out and the series asked the drivers what they had thought. Scotty gave the thumbs down to signal that the track was not racing worthy. The track officials decided that it was okay to race on and lined the field up. The green flag dropped and Scotty lit his tires up on the muddy mess of a track. The cushion was the only groove capable to race on and no passing took place. A yellow came out midway through the race and the track had not gotten much better. Scotty was still stuck in the back of the field and wasn't able to move forward the remaining laps of the heat. He would take the #64 home with an eighth place finish. The next set of heat races were pushed off but then the track decided to cancel the remaining portion of racing action.
Continuing on from Thursday night, racing took place first thing on Friday night. Scotty was placed in the fourth qualifier and started in the eighth position. The field took the green and Scotty was able to pick through some cars in the quick ten lap event. After taking the checkered, Thiel found himself in the fifth position. With the combination of the heat and the qualifier, Scotty would be placed in the first B-main event and in the seventh position. They took the top two from each B main for that night's A-Main event. The field came out of turn four and got the green flag. It took Scotty a few laps but then he started to move forward. In only a few laps he worked his way up to the fifth position. Around the midway point of the race, Scotty set himself up to make the pass for the fourth position. Coming out of turn four he clipped the infield tire and got the car real sideways and stalled the car out. He was pushed back off and had to tag the rear of the field. After restarting 14th, Scotty managed to work his way back up to the seventh position. After the remaining qualifying night finished up, the team found out that they would have to come from Saturday night's first D-Main.
Scotty started in the third spot of the first D-main on Saturday night. They took the top four cars from that which transferred to the first C-main. The field took the green and Scotty settled in the third spot for a few laps. Several cautions took place in the 12 lap event but at the halfway point, Thiel took over the second position. He was unable to get to the leader but it was good enough to transfer on to the C-main event. The crew prepared the car quickly for the C-main as it was up very quickly. Scotty started in the 14th position and would need to get up to the top four in order to transfer on to the B-main. The field took the green flag and Scotty started to move his way through the field. It was still early in the event when Thiel drove in turn three really hard and got sideways to get a good run off of four when another car came up and made contact with his left front tire. The amount of bent up radius rods and the front axle made the steering locked up on Scotty's car and turned him into the infield. That would be the end of Thiel's Short Track Nationals.
It was another unfortunate weekend for the entire STM team. They have fully realized that "LUCK" is the key ingredient for a big time event like the Short Track Nationals. After the rain in the heat race event, it put the team behind the eight ball for the remaining portion of the weekend.
The entire Scott Thiel Motorsports team would like to once again thank all of their great marketing partners for the awesome year they had in 2012. Without the support of these partners, the team could not have done what they all did. Please take the time to go out and check out these fine companies!
