Kaleb Johnson Soaks Up Knowledge During RaceSaver Nationals Tune-Up

Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (Aug. 26, 2019) – Kaleb Johnson battled a challenging evening while gaining racing knowledge at Eagle Raceway last Saturday night during a final tune-up prior to this weekend’s IMCA Sprint Car RaceSaver Nationals.
Johnson knew he faced a daunting evening prior to his arrival at the track and the weather created track conditions that heightened the level of difficulty.
“We knew our night wouldn’t be easy before we got there since we’d have to start in the back of our heat race because we didn’t have a point average,” he said. “But then it rained that afternoon and didn’t stop until after 5 p.m. The races started about an hour late and the rain made for a track that was really difficult to make passes.”
Johnson started eighth and finished seventh in his heat race.
“Unless you were able to get by someone at the start there wasn’t much else you could do,” he said. “It was pretty much follow the leader.”
A third-place finish in the C Main advanced Johnson to the B Main. He started 11th and finished seventh.
“I didn’t get a real good start in the B Main and it took me a while to get around a couple of guys in the back,” he said. “It was only 12 laps so by the time I passed them there were only a few laps left. I was just too far behind the leaders to be able to catch them in time and ended up seventh.”
Johnson did leave Eagle Raceway with more knowledge about racing than when he arrived, which was the primary purpose of the visit.
“One of our struggles over the last couple of years is being decent when a track is rough and heavy, like it was Saturday,” he said. “We were able to find something that worked a lot better than before.”
Johnson is looking forward to competing at the Nationals this weekend. He’s qualified for the A Main at the prestigious event during both of his prior appearances.
“It’s a pretty exciting event with over 110 pre-entries,” said Johnson, whose best finish at the event was 18th last year. “Since only the heat race winners qualify for the A Main, the draw and track conditions are really important. We don’t have a specific goal in mind, but it would be cool to make the A Main on the final night again.”
