Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 14, 2018) – Sammy Swindell had quite an eventful day last Saturday when he and car owner A.G. Rains tackled a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com event at I-30 Speedway.

“I didn’t even know if we’d get there,” he said. “Right after we got into Arkansas the interstate stopped. We got stuck there for probably an hour and a half. We had to make a big detour and then about three quarters of the way there you had to go over a railroad track. It was a big incline and about 10 trucks ahead of us one went over and something happened. It busted his fuel tank so they stopped everything. We were maybe two miles off the interstate then after going about 45 minutes down some narrow country road. We got back on the interstate and about six miles later it stopped again for another big wreck. We set there for a half hour and they started making us get off an exit. We went around and made another detour and finally got back on the road. I didn’t get to the track until about 6:30 p.m. Something that takes two hours and 15 minutes took five and a half hours.”

Swindell got to the track just in time to put heat in the sprint car’s engine prior to hot lapping. He then started toward the back of a heat race and advanced from sixth to fourth place.

“The track wasn’t real wide,” he said. “I was faster than the guys in front, but we had to settle for fourth. That put us as the last car to get into the main event via points.”

Swindell started the A Main on the outside of the eighth row, but he didn’t stay there long.

“Our car seemed like it was quicker than everyone else’s,” he said. “We were able to drive by most everybody fairly easy. We didn’t get held up a whole lot. We finally got to second and the leader was running the best place you could run on the track, which was down on the bottom. I could try something, drop back and catch back up. I thought we were going to be okay toward the end and they had a yellow when we were starting to get to some traffic. It just left him an open track. I tried everything I could, but he was in the best line.”

Swindell charged from 16th to a runner-up result, which was the second-most cars passed during the race. It marked his fourth second-place finish of the season.

“Everything is as good as we can make it,” he said. “The circumstances have kept us from winning. It’s like the lottery. You draw your ticket and hope you win. Ours haven’t been good picks so far.”

Swindell and Rains are scheduled to compete this Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., during the Hooker Hood Classic.
