TMAC TUESDAY- Nationals Frustration Has McCarl Looking Forward to North Dakota
PETERSEN MEDIA: The 2019 Knoxville Nationals will go down as a frustrating one for Terry McCarl and Destiny Motorsports, but the Altoona, IA driver is already looking forward to his next race as the team will be in Destiny Motorsports territory this weekend as they invade North Dakota.
“It just was not our year at the Nationals,” McCarl said. “We had a ton of speed, we just continued to find ourselves on the outside and looking in. Thanks to everyone for all of their hard work preparing for this event, and at the event itself.”
Thursday night McCarl and company were up for their qualifying night, and TMAC would time the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/TheSnowPlow.com backed machine in 12th fastest in time trials.
Heat race action would see McCarl battle with Tim Shaffer for position as they both sought a transfer spot but as the field strung out, TMAC would finish sixth and be forced into the ‘B’.
Looking for one of four transfer positions out of the ‘B’, to move into the preliminary night feature event, McCarl would find himself in a heated battle for the fourth and final position. Battling with Jacob Allen, McCarl would come up just short as his fifth place finish would end his night and ultimately force him into Friday’s Hard Knox program.
Timing in sixth quickest in his qualifying group on Friday, McCarl would again find himself finishing sixth in heat race action, and would make a trip into the ‘B’. On this night he would not be denied as he picked up the win and successfully moved into the final preliminary night feature event of the week.
From the back of the pack, McCarl would put together a great run as he worked his way through the field bettering himself for Saturday night with each and every move.
Working towards the Top-10, contact with another car would result in damage to his front end that would seemingly slow his progress. Despite the issues, McCarl would finish 12th which placed him in the 22-lap ‘B’ on Saturday night.
When the ‘B’ came to life on Saturday, McCarl’s hopes of transferring would be dashed on the opening lap as he would get upside down and end his night as quick as it got started.
“It was a frustrating week, but no excuses from us,” McCarl said. “It wasn’t meant to be and now be focus on our next races this weekend in North Dakota.”
