Hoover wraps up Rookie title with a solid night at Perris
Corey Hoover wrapped up the California Lightning Sprints Rookie of the Year title on Friday night.
Hoover registered a conservative 7th place finish in the 20 lap main during the Oval Nationals at Perris, CA, which marked the 11th top ten finish of his short sprint car career.
The night kicked off with Hoover quickly advancing from fourth to first place during his heat race before finally surrendering the lead to series champ Bobby Michnowicz on the last lap.
“I was able to get a great start and try to extend the lead,” he said. “I knew that Bobby was back there and probably coming to the front quickly so I drove hard but couldn't hold him off.”
The heat race finish put Hoover on the pole for the main event.
“The track was slicked off for the main,” he said. “I stayed in the top five for most of the 20 lap main but the final few cautions bunched up the field again and just couldn't find enough grip to hold them off.”
The 16 year old went in to the final race 2 points in front of Cori Andrews #22 and 27 points in front of Jeremy Queener #0 for Rookie of the Year. By nights end Corey Hoover had 2027 points to Jeremy's 2010 and Cori's 2001 giving him the Rookie Title and a 4th place finish in the overall championship points!
"It was an amazing season and I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out," he said. "I have so many people to thank including my dad and all of our sponsors who helped us out this year."
