DAY TWO OF BRACKET FINALS PRODUCES WINNERS IN RACE OF CHAMPIONS AND GAMBLERS RACE

By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – It was a full day of time runs and bracket racing on Friday at the NHRA Summit Racing Series ET Finals for the Northeast Division 1. In the Race of Champions there were 14 track champions in both the Super Pro and Pro finals, 13 track champions in Pro Bike and 12 champions in Street.

 

The Super Pro Race of Champions final paired Howie Smith making the long tow from Syracuse, N.Y taking on Johnny Gulliford of Iselin, N.J. The pair were almost even of the start but Smith took the win with a quick 7.066/177.97 on a 7.04 dial. Gilliford ran a solid 7.644/170.35 on a 7.59 dial.

 

In the Pro Race of Champions final it was Steve Dunn of Pottstown, Pa. in his ’79 Corvette against Rob Mullard of Rockaway, N.J. in his Nova. Dunn took the double break out win with a 9.287/145.89 on a 9.30 dial. Mullard was out by more running a 9.476/135.93 on a 9.49 dial.

 

Derek Cesari of Warminster, Pa. rode up against Dale Hamilton of Mt. Airy, Md. in the Pro Bike Race of Champions final. Cesari had the better reaction and took the win with an 8.439/144.23 on an 8.41 dial. Hamilton ran a 9.637/143.44 on a 9.60 dial. U.S. 13’s champion, James Farmer of Denton, Md. lost to Cesari in the Semi-finals.

 

The Race of Champions Street final paired David Harvey of Atco, N.J. in his Pontiac against the Duster of Garrett Suders of Keymar, Md. It was a heads up runs as both racers dialed 11.61. Harvey got the jump at he start and took the win with an 11.627/110.11. Suders broke out with an 11.571/114.92.

 

The rest of the field were eligible for the Gambler’s Race. In the Super Pro final it was Ralph Debruin of Midland Park, N.J. against Douglas Doll of Plainsboro, N.J. both in dragsters. Debruin had the better reaction and took the win with a 7.550/176.05 on a 7.54 dial. Doll broke out with a 7.775/160.45 on a 7.79 dial. U.S. 13’s Christian Walston of Crisfield, Md. was the Semi-finalist losing to Doll.

 

In the Pro final it was Ed Talbert of Woodbine, Md. in a Vega against Brock Moshier of Lititz, Pa. also in a Vega. Talbert was on his dial and took the win with a 10.066/122.64 on a 10.06. Moshier ran a 9.074/130.49 on a 9.05 dial.

 

In the Pro Bike John Eaton of Monrovia, Md. rode up against David Ferguson of Newburgh, N.Y. on an Articat Sled. Ferguson broke out with a 9.623/132.13 on a 9.63 dial and Eaton rode to the win with an 8.782/144.04 on an 8.77 dial.

 

Mike Mackey of Paxinos, Pa. in a ’69 Dodge was paired with Nathan Beideman of Parkesburg, Pa. in a Honda Accord in the Street final. Beideman broke out with a 16.610/80.21 on a 16.64 dial while Mackey ran a 12.114/95.91 on an 11.99 dial for the win.

 

The Track Manager’s Race went to Delmar’s own Charlie Cathell. Cathell took advantage of a red light foul by Cecil County Dragway’s Matt Wilson for the win. Cathell in his ’01 Pontiac Firebird Pace Car ran a 15.738/86.65 on a 15.79 dial in the final. Chris Cassidy of Scotch Plains, N.J. representing Old Bridge Raceway Park won the Team Captain’s Race in a ’05 Sierra with a 17.505/76.33 on a 17.30 dial.
