Chuck Hossfeld Wins Big; Smith, Krawczyk, Gustafson, and McCarthy Also Victorious

PERRY, NY-- The first of two visits to Wyoming County International Speedway this year for the mighty modifieds saw several of the "who's who" of modified drivers show for their chance at $5,000 and a guaranteed starting spot in the $10,000 to win 'American 100' on Sunday, October 9th. Three heats would play a role in determining the starting positions in the main event, and those went to Chuck Hossfeld, Austin Kochenash, and the defending 'American 100' champion, Zane Zeiner.

For the main event, defending SST Modified champion Cam Barber in his Gail Barber retro-painted #01 would draw the pole alongside the young gun Calvin Carroll. Using his front row starting spot, Barber charged into the lead and would maintain a comfortable distance on the second position until just after the halfway mark. A lap 62 caution would bunch the field up, and modified veteran Chuck Hossfeld has wheeled his #22 machine up to the second position and would restart alongside Barber. Hossfeld would win the restart taking the outright lead as Barber would settle into second, but charging through the field were Patrick Emerling, Andy Jankowiak, Zane Zeiner, and Earl Paules.

As a few short runs would see it, fan favorite Andy Jankowiak would work his way around Cam Barber for the second position, and a late lap 70 restart would put Jankowiak up along side of Chuck Hossfeld. With the field coming out of turn four, Jankowiak jumped the restart and the yellow would fly to try it again, but due to the updated race procedure discussed in the driver's meeting that day, the jumped restart would result in Jankowiak being sent tail. This would open the door for Patrick Emerling start up alongside Chuck Hossfeld on the lap 70 restart. The remaining five laps were intense as Hossfeld would regain his first place advantage, but had Emerling looking high and Zeiner looking low right on his back bumper. Hossfeld was able to fend off the attempts and claim the checkered flag and the $5,000.  Rounding out the top five were Patrick Emerling, Zane Zeiner, Earl Paules, and Mike Leaty.

Also on the Sunday card were the Super Stocks, and the Classic American Modified Series (CAMS) which are a new vintage modified series. Points leader Dave Krawczyk would wheel his familiar #11k from the second starting spot into the lead on the initial start and would lead the race green to checkered, earning his 8th victory of the season. Rounding out the top 5 for the super stocks would be Joe Horvatits, Dakota Packman, Cassie Logsdon, and Timmy Lewis, Jr. piloting the Dan Majchrzak #14 machine. Cassie Logsdon won the heat race. Paul McCarthy, piloting his sharp looking #14 1937 Chevy Coupe, would find his way to victory lane in the CAMS Vintage Modifieds, defeating the balance of the 12 car field.

Saturday's events included the SST Modified 100, 4 Cylinders, and the Vintage Late Models. Rusty Smith would find his way to victory lane in the Frutchey Motorsports #15x after a race long battle with TJ Potrzebowski, Wayne Baker, and Zack Truesdail. The 22 car field had Smith starting in the 7th position, and worked his way into the top 5 early as pole sitter and past champion Jim Pierce set the pace for the early portion of the race. By around lap 25, the top five saw Pierce leading the way over Smith, Potrzebowski, Baker, and Tyler Rypkema. Smith would overcome Pierce on a restart and Baker would follow on the outside as Pierce would fall back due to mechanical issues.

The mid portion of the race would be dominated by the trio of Smith, Potrzebowski, and Baker as Truesdail, Majchrzak, and Lewis, Jr. would creep there way to the front of the field. Potrzebowski would take the lead from Smith with about 30 laps to go, and it looked like smooth sailing for the McGuire Motorsports #72 as he distance himself from Baker for had also gotten by the Smith machine. A late caution on lap 88 would see the field tighten back up two-by-two, and Smith charged back into the second position through turns one and two and on the next lap would overtake the Potrzebowski ride to regain the lead. Smith would fend off efforts by both Potrzebowski and Baker to capture the victory, as the Potrzebowski, Baker, Truesdail, and Majchrzak would round out the top five. Majchrzak, Lewis, Jr., and Baker would come away with heat wins earlier in the program.

The "young-gun" filled 4 Cylinder field took to the track as well, where sophomore competitor Jacob Gustafson would wheel his #66 machine to victory lane and holding off points leader Madalyn Virts and her #27. Gustafson would take the lead early in the 30 lap event, and fend off all challengers for the remainder of the race, while Virts, Jimmie Pierce, Paul Flye, and Carrie Bolton would round out the top five. The heat race winners were Jennifer Dennie and Virts.

The BullRing is off for the next few weeks, but will return to action in the highly anticipated Fall Shootout on October 8th and 9th, which will feature the $10,000 to win 'American 100' for the modifieds, as well as the SST Modifieds, Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and Vintage Late Models.
