Mike Nichols, the 5-time IMCA stock car national champion did something no other stock car driver has ever done, and he did it with a win at U.S. 30 Speedway Thursday night.
The native of Harlan, Iowa became the first stock car driver in IMCA history to win 400 weekly stock car features. Nichols, who is the point leader at U.S. 30 Speedway, made win number 400 look convincing.
Early on, Kyle Wilkinson, Brendon Eilts, and Ron Pettit all battled for the early race lead. Meanwhile, Nichols made his way through the field.
Nichols took the lead from Wilkinson with eight laps remaining in the 15-lap feature, and from there, Nichols ran away.
Nichols won his eighth feature at U.S. 30 for the 2016 and continues to lead the point standings at the track.
Nichols’ 400th win makes him only the second driver in any IMCA class in history to win 400 times. The other being IMCA modified driver, David Murray Jr.
James Roebuck became the eighth different winner in the IMCA sport modified class. The Genoa native led all 20 laps in the feature to grab his first win at the track in 2016.
The Modified feature was won by Jacob Anson. The defending U.S. 30 Speedway track champion led over half of the 20 laps to claim victory for second consecutive time.
The hobby stocks came down to the wire between Cameron Wilkinson and Damon Richards. Wilkinson was looking for his first ever win at the track, while Richards was looking for his second win at U.S. 30 in 2016. At the line, it was Richards besting Wilkinson by half a car length.
The sport compact feature had an even closer finish in their 12-lap feature. Brooke Fluckiger and Ramsey Meyer were battled for the lead. When the checkered flag finally, Fluckiger edged out Meyer by about three feet to get her first win of the season.
