Limaland Motorsports Park
Nusbaum wins Hull Tribute, Shepherd bags Non-Qualifiers feature; Valenti powers to win in Thunderstocks, and Rolly Heyder dominates in Trucks
Beautiful weather greeted racers and fans at Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday night as the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds took center stage for the inaugural Modified Mayhem Tribute to Terry Hull. Hull, a three-time Limaland track champion in the modifieds, passed away during the off season after a lengthy battle with cancer. Fellow DIRTcar Modified racer and one of Terry’s fiercest competitors, Todd Sherman, and several friends, relatives, and racers raised money to honor Hull with the $2040 to win, $340 to start purse. Even more money came in, allowing there to be a Non-Qualifiers feature paying the winner $1150 and starters $160.
Dillon Nusbaum of Warsaw Indiana piloted his No. 17N to the victory in the 20 Lap feature honoring Hull. No. X Eric Shepherd Jr. of Owensville, Ohio led all 20 laps of the Non-Qualifiers feature for the Modifieds, In Lock Sixteen Thunderstock action, Fostoria Ohio’s Shawn Valenti willed the Dippman Motorsports 74V to victory lane. Finally, in Dirt Tack Truck Series feature action, it was Galena, Ohio’s Rolly Heyder winning in the No. 10 truck.
The Dirt Track Trucks would kick off feature action with Rolly Heyder jumping the initial start and having to go back a row on the complete restart. As the green flag flew, Rolly and his son Joey in the No. 8 would take off side by side in the 2nd row and watch the No. 17 of Phil Hicks grab the early lead. On lap 2, Rolly would pass Hicks on the inside and take off with the lead, Joey followed suit and tried to run the No. 10 down, but would fall short, finishing second. Hicks would hang on to third with No. 44w Vince Wagoner powering to fourth after starting fourteenth. Harrod Ohio’s Chris Bitters would round out the top five.
Next up was the Non-Qualifiers feature for the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds. No. 17J Jarrod Klay and No. X Eric Shepherd Jr. would bring the field to green, with Shepherd taking the early lead. Brennan Sherman was the man on the move in the No. 82. After starting twelfth, Sherman battled his way as high as third on lap 12 before a mistake on a late restart cost him a couple positions, coming home fifth. No. 18 Brendan Rassel would track Shepherd for most of the feature but was unable to make a move, and would finish second, No. 45 Robby Henderson finished third, UNOH Racer No. 1 Randy Giroux finished fourth and the aforementioned Brennan Sherman completed the top 5.
In the Modified Mayhem Tribute to Terry Hull A Main, it was No. 4 Jason Kinney and No. 3W Dylan Woddling leading the field to the green flag. Woodling would grab the initial lead, while behind him was intense racing with drivers battling 3 wide for multiple laps until the No. 16 of Jeff Koz found some purchase on the high side of the racetrack and took the lead on lap 7. Koz’ car got loose and Woodling made contact, slowing both drivers just enough for No. 17 Dillon Nusbaum to make a move on the inside to grab the lead. Nusbaum would win over Koz and Woodling, with No. 65 Todd Sherman clawing his way to a fourth-place finish after starting eleventh, and No. 7 Brad DeYoung completing the top 5.
The Lock Sixteen Thunderstocks would complete the night’s racing action. No. 17H Devon Helmig and No. 82 Chris Douglas would lead the field to green in the fifteen lap A Main, with Helmig grabbing the early lead. Shawn Valenti would get the Dippman Motorsports 74V wound up on the high side of the Limaland quarter mile and take the lead on lap 4. No. 22T Tony Anderson would battle multiple laps with Douglas, then have a 3 lap battle with his teammate Helmig, before settling into second on lap 9. Valenti would roll to the win, with Anderson second, Helmig third, Douglas fourth, and No. 27 Frank Paladino completing the top 5.
