Brian Brown- Solid Start at Cocopah!
Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 got their 2016 season off to a good start at Cocopah Speedway’s Winter Heat last week. The event encompassed five race nights from January 1 to January 9. The highlight for the Grain Valley, Missouri driver was a fourth place finish last Friday night. The team found good car speed all week after working hard this offseason.
Things started pretty well for you on New Year’s Day.
We went from third to second in the heat and fifth to fourth in the qualifier. But then it laid rubber in the A and there wasn't much passing. We started thirteenth and finished thirteenth.
So it went pretty well the first night.
We were really happy to start the 2016 season with a lot of car speed right out of the box. It just shows you how much effort Chad (Morgan), Wyatt Burks and Michael Williams put in during the winter.
The following Saturday and Wednesday night did not go as well.
We just drew horrible and the track wasn’t conducive to passing. Some nights are like that. You can't control luck and track conditions.
Things fell well for you last Friday. You ended up with a fourth place finish.
Friday, we got a better draw and the track was in great shape. We were able to go from fifth to second in the heat and sixth to third in the qualifier. That put us on the front row of the feature. We took off and kept up with Danny (Lasoski) for the first ten laps. Unfortunately, when we got to traffic we were too tight and couldn't maneuver the way we needed and got passed by Shane (Stewart) and Dale (Blaney). But we were happy with a good solid fourth place finish.
Saturday, the draw didn’t go well for you, but you were able to make charges in both the B and the main event.
It was another bad draw (he would finish seventh in both the heat and his qualifier) and narrow track conditions. We had to start eighth in the B and was able to move up to second and get a transfer. In the feature, we had good car speed and we were able to run up through there and finish twelfth.
Overall, it was a good way to start the season, and the weather was a lot warmer than Missouri!
We had good car speed when the track conditions widened out. We are looking forward to maybe hitting some Florida racing. If not, we will be ready to roll at the FVP Shootout with the Outlaws in Vegas.
Winter Heat has grown into a great event hasn’t it?
I want to thank Greg Burgess, Tommie Estes and all the staff at the Cocopah Speedway for all their hard work and hospitality all week in such a great event. We’re looking forward to going back next year and seeing how much it continues to grow.
